The Formentera Council's “Language Advisory Service” (Servei d'Assessorament Lingüístic) released its yearly calendar: a coil-spring for the office's latest educational campaign about language.
How we use words and what makes them peculiar
Past editions' themes have covered common varieties of local figs, grapes, fishing tackle and vocabulary specific to the countryside. This year the calendar spotlights a diverse array of terminology in order to take a closer look at the etymology behind the words, what about the terms themselves makes them unusual and, in some cases, the Catalan-speaking territories the featured words are typically heard.
The calendar uses pictures to illustrate words like ca, tomata, ensalada and tonyina (not to mention freu, indiot and calcetí) as well as expressions like tabacar, saligardo and emmorinat.
Two thousand copies have been printed and are available at various Council offices including the Citizen's Information Office (OAC).
