Formentera Council and UIB sign collaborative pact on local heritage

ConveniUIBDoctor Llorenç Huguet, rector of the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB), and Formentera Council president Jaume Ferrer have together signed a collaborative accord detailing the drafting of recommendations on Cultural Interest Sites.

The agreement was signed Wednesday morning at 11 am, 25 June, at the Son Lledó campus of UIB Palma de Mallorca.

Falling within the realm of the Council's duties vis-à-vis historical patrimony is the administrative management of declarations of special interest sites. This includes not only those sites of special cultural interest but also those which are classified as 'historical patrimony' and included on a list of similar sites in the Balearic Islands community.

Also in attendance for the signing was Dr. David Pons, vice rector of Economy and Infrastructure; Dr. Maria Josep Mulet, director of the Department of Historical Sciences and Art Theory at the UIB; Dr. Manel Calvo, professor of Historical Sciences and Art Theory.

The university's first contributions as part of the accord have already been drafted: communiqués recommending for cultural interest site-distinction the old La Savina penitentiary complex known as 'Es Campament' and the archaeological dig sites of Es Cap de Barbaria I and La Murada de sa Cala.

Council president Ferrer assured that the new convention would “both make possible investigative research on Formentera's cultural patrimony and guarantee a promotion and protection of these acquisitions.” Dr. Mulet underscored her department's willingness to “assist in any efforts – administrative, research or protection and conservation-oriented – related to cultural heritage.”
