A literary twist for Sant Jordi

sant jordi2015El dia de Sant Jordi, although translated as Saint George's Day, is perhaps better understood as Book Day, or 'el dia del llibre', another of the appellations that is often given to 23 April. Names aren't the only thing that abound on this esteemed spring holiday, as crowds of festive residents gathered first this morning – at the plaça de la Constitució – and again this afternoon – at the Centre Gabrielet – to celebrate the special day.

This morning, the Formentera Council mounted a pergola at the square in Sant Francesc and the local branch of Obra Cultural Balear set up an information and book-selling stand. Workers manning the tables reported that, of the throngs of morning visitors, school children made up an especially large percentage.

Under the auspices of the same borrowed shade, staff of the Marià Villangómez library installed a second-hand book stand and donated books from the library's collection. For its part, Council representatives were also on hand to distribute a publication entitled “Futur del Nucli Urbà de La Savina” ('Future of La Savina'), released over the course of the different debates held recently on infrastructural changes in the port town.

For crowds this afternoon, two different award ceremonies will crown local winners: of the XVI Antoni Tur “Gabrielet” bookmark design contest and the Robert Lewis Baldon children's literature competition.
