Sign-ups begin for course on social and cultural integration

Curs integracio premsaTuesday 3 November marks the start of the fifth year that the CiF office of social welfare offers its course on social and cultural integration in Formentera. The course is intended for immigrants without residency papers, foreign-born residents that possess all required paperwork but who might face difficulties in the renewal process, or immigrants hoping to start the naturalisation process. The aim, explained office chief Vanessa Parellada, is «to help individuals obtain the documentation – issued by the Balearic autonomous community – that shows an effort has been made an effort to integrate, thus allowing its holder to obtain legal residency, renew it, or assist the process of requesting citizenship».

Classes are held Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from half past four to seven, 3-26 November. Among the subjects discussed are the values protected under the Spanish constitution, human rights, the Balearic statute of autonomy and equality. Individuals who successfully complete the course are given the document demonstrating their effort to integrate.

The course is free and taught at the school for adult learning (l’Escola d’Adults) by employees of the Formentera Council. Students have until Tuesday 3 November to register at the office of social welfare, next to the police station. Group size has varied from 10 to 16 over the years, but the course – which, according to Parellada, provides an excellent opportunity to «share experiences and knowledge about our country» – is always a success.
