Earlier today Consell de Formentera President Alejandra Ferrer and Councillor of Sport Paula Ferrer unveiled details about the twelfth Formentera Half-Marathon and ninth 8K Sant Ferran-to-La Savina Fun Run set to unfold this Saturday 9 October. The two races will see nearly three thousand athletes of varying nationalities converge on the island, making the event the largest on Formentera's calendar of fitness fixtures. Also on hand at the press conference were Xisco Mateu, director of the regional Agència d'Estratègia Turística (AETIB); Manuel Hernández, director of organising group Unisport Consulting; Alex Marí, commercial director of Trasmapi, and Carles Verde, director of CaixaBank's commercial division in the Pine Islands, one of the premier sponsors of the races.

The kick-off for both trials has been set at 4.30pm: as is customary, the 21K Half-Marathon will start at La Mola lighthouse and the 8K run will begin in Sant Ferran, with registered participants numbering 1,750 for the former and 1,150 for the latter.

President Ferrer described the races, which were called off last year on account of the pandemic, as having "a special place in athletes' hearts". "Plus they're the perfect opportunity for participants and their companions to enjoy Formentera —our nature, beaches and gastronomic offer— in October."

October, sporting events aplenty

The Councillor of Sport gave praise to the organisers, forces of law and order, health workers and volunteers who make the events, which she described as "benchmarks in Spain and worldwide", possible. She also highlighted the other sporting events still on the docket like the Marnaton (16 October) and 6th Volta Cicloturista and 27th BTT La Mola (22–24 October) which together will draw some five thousand adepts of sport to Formentera's shores. Ferrer also apologised and asked for patience amid the attendant road closures that will intermittently block vehicle traffic.

Lastly, Unisport Consulting's Manuel Hernández marvelled at the scale of the event, for which few spots remain, and drew attention to the fact that early signups for next year's half-marathon already total 700.

Intermittent road closures

To ensure the safety of the participants, the following roads will be closed to vehicle traffic on Saturday 9 October:

·PM 820 (Avinguda de la Mola), between Can Blaiet restaurant and La Mola lighthouse [2.00pm to 5.30pm]
·PM 820, between Sant Ferran and La Mola [4.00pm to 7.00pm]
·PM 820-2, between Sant Ferran and La Savina by way of Es Pujols [3.00pm to 7.30pm]
