Formentera offers posidonia pulled from beaches for traditional use

foto 2021 illetesThe Formentera Department of Environment is pleased to report it will offer islanders posidonia seagrass removed last month from the beaches of Illetes and Cala Saona.

Interested parties can request up to two lorryloads in person at the FDE (Àrea de Medi Ambient), online through the OVAC, over the phone by calling 971 32 12 10 or by sending an email to mediambient@conselldeformentera.cat. Delivery is free of charge.

Environment chief Antonio J. Sanz applauded islanders for “giving posidonia a new use” and encouraged them “to contribute to the circular economy, which we believe is fundamental to our island”.

So far this year, approximately 2,000 cubic metres of posidonia have been cleared from Formentera shores, less than half the haul in 2020, when storms left 5,000m3 of seagrass washed up on the local coast.

Natural treatment to curb mosquitoes and chironomids at Ses Salines wetlands

The Formentera Department of Environment reports that, from tomorrow, crews will begin spraying wetland areas of Ses Salines nature reserve with a natural substance designed to keep numbers of mosquitoes and chironomids in check. Operations will center on typical larvae hotspots like Estany Pudent, Estany des Peix and Salines d’en Marroig.

Public entity Tragsa will pilot the €34,278 operation, which will see two workers fumigating over 32 days this summer until late October.

Bacillus thuringiensis israeliensis is a natural substance that acts specifically on the larvae of target insects.

Consell removes 186 abandoned vehicles in 2020 and 2021

foto 2021 retirada vehiclesThe Formentera Department of Environment reports that 186 cast-off vehicles were towed from public roads and private land between last year and the first three months of 2021, an effort performed with help from the Formentera Local Police. During the same period, hazardous components were removed from 263 vehicles at the Ca na Negreta vehicle decontamination site, or CAT.

FDE chair Antonio J Sanz said the department had ramped up removals and streamlined the process over the previous year in a bid to tackle what is an increasingly common problem. “Derelict vehicles on the public thoroughfare and private land aren’t just eyesores”, insisted Sanz, “they’re also the source of a substantial amount of environmental pollution”. Islanders who wish to dispose of an old vehicle should go to Es Cap waste management site (CAT) directly or call Ca na Negreta at 971 575 118.

Fines and towing
FDE has issued 81 fines for junked vehicles this year alone. Dumping infractions are typically classed, according to the related municipal bylaw, as “serious” or “very serious”, with associated fines ranging from €751 to €1,500 and €1,500 to €3,000, respectively.

When it is suspected a vehicle has been abandoned, protocol requires that a member of FDE staff and a local law enforcement officer affix a decal identifying the vehicle as derelict. The vehicle’s owner then has one month to rectify the mistake and move their vehicle, otherwise it is towed to the Es Cap tip and the owner receives a notice and fine.

Owners can reclaim their vehicle at any time provided they pay storage and towing fees. When the established wait period elapses, unclaimed vehicles are sent to the CAT for decontamination.

Ecovidrio encourages glass recycling with “Lil' Recyclers”

foto 2021 ecovidrio 2021 BEcovidrio- and Consell de Formentera-backed contest to build awareness at primary schools and educate pupils about glass recycling.

More than 600 primary schoolchildren from island’s four schools join push for environmental awareness-building.

School that recycles most glass containers wins €500 cheque for school supplies

Formentera, 19 April 2021 - Ecovidrio, the non-profit organization managing glass container recycling across Spain, has teamed up with the Consell de Formentera to bring “Los Peque Recicladores” (Lil’ Recyclers) to Formentera. The educational campaign leverages a contest to build awareness among pupils about the importance of recycling glass.

Today until 31 May, each of the four schools in Formentera’s three urban centers will receive one custom-designed container for students, teachers and family members to dispose of glass containers.

The school that recycles the most kilogrammes of glass containers per pupils enrolled wins, receiving a cheque for 500 euros for educational material or sports equipment.

Participating schools are CP Sant Ferran de ses Roques, CEIP El Pilar, CEIP Mestre Lluís Andreu and CEIP Verge Miraculosa.

With the promise of tailor-made mini-glues for each participating school, a parallel push, “Lil’ Volunteers”, challenges children to hatch their own plan to mobilise the school community and promote glass packaging recycling.

Glass recycling on Formentera numbers
According to the latest available data, Formentera recycled 670,220 kilogrammes of glass containers in 2020, for a per-islander average of 56.3 kilogrammes (about 193 containers).
The island has one glass recycling been for every 145 inhabitants, with 82 glass “igloos” across the island.

Environmental benefits of glass recycling
One hundred percent of the collected discarded glass is recycled and used to make new containers in a potentially infinite process in which no properties are depleted. More recycled glass means smaller landfills.

Glass recycling is a key part of the movement to stop climate change. By using cullet or calcín (recycled glass) in new packaging, we extract fewer raw materials from nature, slowing soil erosion and deforestation.

Plus, the manufacturing process nets fewer CO2 emissions and saves energy.

About Ecovidrio
Ecovidrio is the non-profit organisation that manges glass packaging recycling in Spain. When founded in 1998, one year after passage of legislation on packaging and packaging waste, Ecovidrio became the steward of a complete and universal public service, with financing coming from 8,000 packaging companies whose “punto verde” contributions make the recycling system possible.

Ecovidrio delivers a top-quality bin recycling service, we’ve also added bins and developed collection infrastructure, invested in plans and resources to increase glass recycling in restaurants and hotels, mobilised around educational pushes and promoted prevention and eco-designed glass containers.

Recycling rates under Ecovidrio grew exponentially between 2000 and 2018, shooting from 31.3% to 76.8% according to the latest official data from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITERD).

Glass packaging recycling is a key part of sustainable development, helping foster the transition to a circular economy and combating climate change. In addition, glass packaging recycling supports the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (11) on Sustainable Cities and Communities, (12) on Responsible Production and Consumption and (13) on Climate Action.

Consell gives dog-owners dispensers and bottles to clean pet mess from public spaces

cartell 2021 cansThe Formentera Department of Environment has unveiled a new campaign seeking to educate dog-owners about the importance of picking up after their pets in public spaces. To make the job easier, the Consell has made available 3,000 bag dispensers, 1,000 bag pack refills and 1,000 bottles of sanitising liquid free of charge at the FDE (Àrea de Medi Ambient, Carrer de Mallorca, 15, Sant Ferran).

Interested islanders can schedule pickup by calling 971 32 12 10 or emailing mediambient@conselldeformentera.cat (proof the animal has been chipped will be requested). The Consell based its €6,219 order on Formentera’s 3,105 chipped dogs in the Balearic Islands Identification Registry of Pets (RIACIB).

In the words of FDE chair Antonio J Sanz, “pet owners need to be responsible for their animals. As this initiative highlights, we could all be a little more mindful of keeping our streets and parks clean. We’re appealing to pet owners’ sense of responsibility and asking everyone to do their part, because promoting cleanliness and respect for the surroundings is everyone’s business.”
