Formentera assesses season and starts work on unique lodging platform

foto 2022vii COPTToday Alejandra Ferrer, vice president of the Consell de Formentera and councillor of tourism promotion and management; Carlos Bernús, chief of tourism promotion; members of the Formentera Association of Hotels, the Chamber of Commerce, the local small- and medium-sized business association (PIMEF), the Balearic Confederation of Business Groups (CAEB), travel agencies and other figures from the local tourism sector, and political party representatives, gathered to analyse occupancy data for the month of June at a meeting of the Commission for Tourism Promotion and Management (COPT).

According to surveys conducted by the Formentera Observatory, occupancy in 2022 is similar to that of 2019. In May, the average occupancy rate was 47.28%, and in June it was 84.62%. By the same barometer, 59% of visitors stay in houses and apartments, and the remaining 41% in hotels.

As highlighted at the meeting, the tourism barometer also indicates key data points like the diverse nationalities of Formentera's visitors. In terms of visitor numbers, Spanish travellers come in first, followed by Italian, then German, French and English. But tourism officials pointed out that third place could just as well be formed by grouping together visitors from other increasingly well-represented countries like Portugal, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.

Bookings engine
Meeting attendees also sat for presentations of assorted types of bookings engines that COPT wishes to implement on Formentera. The aim is to have a single platform with information on the various accommodations available on the island, which promotes Formentera and acts as a clearing house for information on local activities and events. At the close of the gathering, Councillor Ferrer pointed out that this platform could also be used to create accommodation and experience packages, and would be significantly less expensive than large accommodation platforms.

This year's Passarel·la de Moda draws inspiration from Formentera's culture of seafaring

foto 2022 passarella Today the Consell de Formentera presented the 14th Formentera Fashion Show (Passarel·la de Moda) to be held this Friday 1 July at 10.00pm in La Savina. The theme of the 2022 Passarel·la is 'Saltpeter' (Salitre) and the event will feature 22 local designers, four more than last year.

Ana Juan, president and councillor of commerce, stressed that in choosing the theme "we were moved by the idea of preserving our heritage, seafaring culture and fashion, upon which many local women have built their livelihood". President Juan added that "the UN designated 2022 as the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries. The slogan, 'Small scale, great value', fits perfectly with our fishing activity and also with made-on-Formentera fashion and craft designs".

Juan pointed out that the Passarel·la de Moda "is already a local touchstone and that, year after year, we try to improve it to encourage and promote local textile merchants and designers", which she called "a very important asset of our commercial fabric" and "part of the Formentera that we like to show to our visitors".

The event will showcase jewellery, shoes, handbags, wedding dresses and, above all, the island's signature style with world-class avant-garde creations inspired by nature, the sea, the colours and life of Formentera.

The 2022 edition will feature the following firms with local ties: Hippie Shop Formentera, Atzavara, Janne bikinis, Marziposa Lingerie & Passepartoi, Equilibre Formentera, Simona Colzi & Le voyeur Vintage, Macramé & Espardenyes Torres, Molly Mallones & Es Pelegri, Ishvara Kavra de Formentera, Elena Hurtado & Lorenzo Pepe "Obi", Michelle Crocitto, Eva Cardona, Laura López & Ginkgo Creations, Vintage Ibiza and Formentera, Ur Joies and Majoral.

Live music and free shuttle bus service from Sant Francesc

New to this year's event will be live musical performances from musicians José Asunción (violin) and Anastasia McQueen (saxophone) marking each runway presentation.

In addition, for all those who want to go to the event, the Consell has enabled a free bus service. Buses will set out at 9.15pm and 9.30pm from Sa Senieta car park, with a return trip scheduled at 11.30pm from the end of the Marina Promenade (Passeig de la Marina), next to Fishermen's Wharf (Moll de Pescadors).

Twelve professional models from the company Deva Models will walk the catwalk at an event presented by Gonzalo Polo and journalist Elena Gregori.

President Juan also applauded the collaboration of companies and entities like the Formentera Small and Medium-Sized Business Association (Pimef), Balearic Port Authority, Fishermen's Guild, Trasmapi, Ràdio Illa and Carbòniques Tur for making the Passarel·la de Moda possible.

Formentera gives owners of holiday rentals a document to prevent house parties and offer legal security

The Formentera Offices of Tourist Planning and Interior is making available to owners of vacation rental properties a document with a clause on nuisance activities, parties and exceeding established numbers of guests.

Alejandra Ferrer, vice president and councillor of tourism, said the document was created "to offer islanders a resource to prevent illegal parties and foster a neighbourly coexistence that is respectful of residents and visitors". The document states that "activities, particularly large parties, [causing] nuisance, harm or damage to third parties or neighbours" are "expressly prohibited".

The clause explicitly forbids:

- Events and parties in the rented accommodation without prior written permission from the lessor.
- For-profit parties without the appropriate authorisations.
- Occupying or over-nighting in the accommodation by individuals other than those established in the maximum capacity and listed in the document as guests.

Signers acknowledge that "failure to comply with these clauses will result in the automatic termination of the rental contract and guests will be asked to leave the rented property immediately".  Law enforcement will be contacted and enlisted to assist in the eviction in the event of non-compliance. The document includes the details of all persons who will be staying in the property and who will be responsible for any fines that may apply.

This document is signed and a copy is sent to Formentera Local Police, who are empowered to act more effectively. "We want to raise awareness among visitors as they arrive, so that they know what's required of them. At the same time, this is about providing legal support to property owners and facilitating the work of law enforcement", said Vice President Ferrer.

The clause has been tailored to the current regulations after a similar document underlining COVID-19 restrictions was well received last year. This document will be sent to tourism industry employers, estate agencies and tourism operators, and is available for download in the Tourism Planning section of the Consell de Formentera website in Catalan, Spanish and English.
