Consell puts out learning material to shape visibility and drive home value of heritage among youth

foto 2022 patrimoni cap de barbariaThe Formentera Office of Heritage has provided the island's four primary schools and secondary schools with digital learning material aimed at drawing attention to local heritage. This material is part of the 'Coneix patrimoni' (Know Heritage) initiative launched by the Consell at the end of last year.

The educational and other assorted materials developed by the Centmans cooperative at the initiative of the Consell de Formentera will be used in local classrooms. The first educational booklet consists of 18 pages exploring the historical site known as Cap deBarbaria II.

According to Raquel Guasch, Councillor of Heritage, the booklet provides information about the site "to invite and encourage our youth in a multipronged educational way to familiarise themselves with our heritage and pass it on". The first unit comes on a USB flash drive and the project's engineers hope to develop new units on places of importance to local history and heritage.

"Again, this is about getting the word out about and enriching the island's cultural heritage. Whether the history course in November, the workshops on traditional cooking or the Joan Marí Cardona Local Study Days, we're pursuing an array of avenues in an effort to reach all ages. Now it's children and young people's turn. This initiative goes back to start of the legislative term and ties into the impulse to safeguard this legacy and showcase it moving forward", stressed the councillor.

foto 2022 escoletaThe Formentera Office of Education is pleased to report that from Monday 31 January to Friday 4 February, the administration of the Sant Ferran nursery, or escoleta, will oversee a special period of enrolment for children born in 2021.

The escoleta will accommodate seven more children, said Susana Labrador, Councillor of Education, who expressed satisfaction at being able "to offer more places to Formentera children and families who need it".

Registration: 31 January to 4 February, both inclusive

Enrolment can be completed online on the Virtual Citizen Information Office (OVAC) or by phoning the Sa Miranda escoleta at 971 32 34 15 between 9.30am and 2.30pm, Monday to Friday, to schedule an in-person appointment. On account of the public health situation, appointments are required. No inquiries or applications will be accepted after the established date.

Once applications are submitted, the admissions process will proceed as follows: The provisional list will be made public on 9 February, after which a period of claims will follow from 9 to 11 February. The definitive list of acceptees will be published on 16 February and enrolment will take place between 17 at 21 February. Children will be able to start attending in March.

The Sant Ferran escoleta opened its doors in September. Today it serves 27 one- to three-year-olds and employs 5 workers. Sa Miranda escoleta currently serves 82 children under three, 7 of whom are babies. Councillor Labrador voiced her hopes that the new period of enrolment would bring the centre's waiting list for babies to zero, as typically occurs with other age groups. She also pointed out that the Sant Ferran escoleta was designed to expand to adapt to growing enrolment.

foto 2021 cursos tardor catalaThe Formentera Language Advisory Service (Servei d'Assessorament Lingüístic, SAL) is pleased to announce the start of the first round of Catalan courses for adult learners. Courses will be offered at the A2, B1, B2 and C1 levels, with 216 students across 11 groups.

According to Councillor of Language Policy Raquel Guasch, the classes are about "ensuring everyone who wants to learn Catalan can do so, which is why the courses continue to be free and timetables are designed based on the possible profiles of students.

Classes are held at the Sant Ferran Cultural Space (Espai Cultural de Sant Ferran, formerly CEIP Sant Ferran de ses Roques), where two classrooms allow the SAL to meet this year's high demand. They are scheduled to end in February 2022, in time for the official exams administered by the Balearic government. According to its website, the Directorate General for Language Policy will begin registration for the exams in November.

Apart from these courses, the second week of November will see the start of Catalan classes for workers at the Formentera hospital. After courses held during the summer, this time there will be four groups for four distinct levels. Aimed at facilitating Catalan-language learning for health workers, the offer stems from an agreement between the island's government and the Hospital.

The Formentera Office of Language Policy (Conselleria de Politica Lingùistica/CPL) is pleased to announce it will host a free course for primary school pupils new to the Catalan language. Approximately thirty children will be divided into two small groups: one for years three and four and another for years five and six. Classes start Monday 8 November in the Catalan room of the old Sant Ferran school.

Councillor of Language Policy Raquel Guasch stressed the initiative was about "facilitating the support that children and their families receive, and making sure that resources to grow familiar with the language are within their reach". Councillor Guasch said the idea was "to associate Catalan with a positive experience through dynamic and playful activities, and encourage schoolchildren to use the language outside the classroom".
