In run-up to Jan. 2021 exams, Consell offers ten Catalan courses, levels A2–C2

cartell 2020 cursos catalaThe Language Advisory Service of the Consell de Formentera has teed up ten sets of courses from the A2 to C2 level to help students prepare for the next official round of Catalan language exams expected in January 2021.

Lessons begin 5 and 6 October and registration runs from tomorrow 15 September to the 25th. Enrolment can be completed online on the OVAC (Virtual Citizen Information Office, https://ovac.conselldeformentera.cat) or in person at Carrer Ramon Llull, 6, in Sant Francesc. In-person appointments must be scheduled online or by calling 971 32 10 87 between 3.30pm and 8.30pm.

Free courses, limited space and preventive actions
The ten cohorts include four beginners’ groups (A2), two B1, two B2 and two C1-C2 level groups (C1 and C2 groups are mixed). Public health constraints mean that this year space will be limited and students may not participate in more than one course at a time. Individuals who have completed enrolment will receive a confirmation e-mail before the start of lessons, expected to take place the first week of October. Classes are free.

Raquel Guasch, who heads the department responsible for normalising Catalan use, described pandemic-driven protocol as “crucial” to continuing to organise courses in promotion of the local language. In 2019 a total of 210 islanders signed up to take the free language courses from the Consell de Formentera.

Sent home last week as preventive measure, summer school group returns to class

The Consell de Formentera reports that today marks the return to summer school programming for a group of children at the Sant Francesc Escola d’Estiu campus who were sent home Thursday 20 August amid concern over a possible exposure to Covid-19. Families learned yesterday that their children would be able to resume normal attendance at the summer school from today after the test results of the individual in question came back negative.

As for the situation at the municipal sailing school, local government is awaiting results from screenings late last week of approximately eighty students. The second group of Escola de Vela instructors will undergo PCR testing today, the results of which will be available in the coming days.

Upkeep, repairs and sanitising at Formentera schools as pupils return to classrooms

foto 2020 obres collegi 2The Formentera offices of education and island services report that this summer crews traversed the island to prepare local schools for returning pupils and teachers this Thursday. The work happened in response to requests from school administrative teams, parents’ associations and student councils.

This year, per new pandemic protocol, the Consell de Formentera has hired additional cleaning and maintenance personnel in an effort to guarantee uninterrupted compliance with sanitary measures. Such workers will be on school grounds to disinfect facilities during class time, reinforcing the efforts of evening crews.

CEIP Mestre Lluís Andreu
With the Consell maintenace brigade setting the foundation, uneven walkways were graded near a number of outdoor play areas. Two 6x8-metre sheds, paid for by the parents’ association, were installed as well—one at the northern side of the lower building, another by the upper building.

Social distancing signage was also set up, painting was touched up in the school’s interior, water fountains were removed, and unsafe branches were trimmed from several trees.

CEIP Sant Ferran
Fresh paint went up outside Sant Ferran classrooms and across the school’s exterior. Water fountains were taken out, fluorescent lamps were swapped out for improved lighting and work was done to free up additional spaces inside the school. Air conditioner filters will be replaced in the days ahead.

CEIP El Pilar de la Mola
New paint was applied indoors and out and repairs were performed on one of the portables. The outdoor water fountain was removed, the locks were checked (new fencing is in the works) and excess brush was removed from the garden, where a general cleanup was performed. Three-hundred metres of rope went up round the outdoor play area to separate it from surrounding woods.

The Consell has lent canopies to the schools for use as shade-giving structures.

Cleanup and sanitising at school entrances
In the hours before classes begin tomorrow, employees of the company contracted by the Consell to oversee cleaning will disinfect and clean areas with a specific product outside school access points. The task will be repeated on the 14th ahead of the start of classes at local nurseries.

183 children attend Consell de Formentera Escola d’Estiu

Escola estiu 2020 mascaretesThe Formentera department of youth reports that last week 183 children started at the Consell de Formentera’s summer programme for kids. In 2020, the Escola d’Estiu counts among its participants 100 children in Sant Francesc, 58 in Sant Ferran and 25 in La Mola. Of the 29 workers in charge of the children’s care, 27 are day counsellors and two are directors.

Youth office chief Vanessa Parellada pointed out that places were awarded to every single applicant, even those whose applications were submitted after the initial deadline, once the programme was already under way. Nineteen boys and girls missed the original cut-off date, noted Parellada, who explained that amid this year’s unusual circumstances, “an extra effort was made and extra staff hired in order to meet the needs of Formentera families”.

Staggered drop-off and pick-up
The Escola d’Estiu daily programme runs from 8.00am to 2.30pm, and this year, parents and carers are asked to choose from one of several drop-off and pick-up times. The main theme of the 2020 programme is health, while the watchword —“Ens cuidam”— aims to encourage personal care.

Special safety protocol
Special protocol will be in place to prevent the spread of covid-19. Group size will be reduced and counsellors will interact exclusively with their assigned groups, abstaining from contact with other children to keep transmission risks to a minimum and forgoing trips outside the centre for the same. Cleaning and disinfecting measures mandated by the authorities will be in place too.
