This February at Casal de Joves, local youth celebrate Valentine’s Day and Carnival

foto ii2020 Agenda CdJoves2Formentera’s youth department wishes to announce its activities programme for February at the Casal de Joves. Every Wednesday at 6.30pm, Casal members can cosy up on the settee with popcorn, friends and a rotating selection of films of particular relevance to youngsters.

Friday the 7th and Saturday the 8th, a clay modelling workshop will give participants the chance to fashion their creativity. The first day will be devoted to making raw clay, while the second is reserved for decorating pieces.

The workshops keep coming on 14 February, when another guided arts and crafts session will present participants the opportunity to celebrate Valentine’s Day by making garlands and heart-shaped piñatas.

Next day, youth at the Casal can catch a workshop on Mexican cuisine. Then Friday 21 February comes with a couples’ tournament of table football, the winners of which will walk away with two free movie tickets.

Carnival
The Casal’s Carnival celebration happens Saturday 22 February. The only thing asked of partygoers is that they show up in fancy dress; the rest —music and fun— are provided. A prize will be awarded to the best dressed.

On Friday 28 February it’s el joc del diccionari. One of the world’s most entertaining board games, “the dictionary game” requires imagination, concentration and creativity. A day later, Casal youth are invited on trip to Eivissa to catch a film at the cinema.

Youth councillor Vanessa Parellada highlighted Casal staff’s tirelessness planning activities to increase the leisure options out there for Formentera youth and create community.

Workshops take place at 6.30pm at the Casal de Joves.

foto xii019 casal 2The youth office of the Consell de Formentera unveiled details today about the Casal de Joves’ December programming calendar. Starting things off at 5.00pm this Saturday, 7 December, is a calisthenics strength-building circuit and demonstration by Lenny Muller.

The Casal will host its Wednesday movie night on 11 December. Film fans are welcome to come cosy up on the couch and make themselves at home. Popcorn will be served. At 6.00pm on Thursday and Friday, the holiday programme already well under way, the Casal will be the scene of two Christmas decoration workshops. Head of the youth department Vanessa Parellada said this year’s programme was about giving “the young people of Formentera more options for enjoying these important holidays”.

Youth and holidays
Youngsters will be treated to a visit from the royal pages at schools Wednesday and Thursday, 18-19 December. A day later, Fridays for Future marches resume and so does the 4.00pm street dance demonstration in Sant Francesc’s Plaça de la Constitució. On Saturday, 28 December, the Casal hosts a 6.00pm cooking workshop on buckwheat crêpes and homemade cacao cream.

Diverespai
Geared towards children and teens, Diverespai’s mix of activities and bouncy toys has its yearly run in the Marc Ferrer High School gymnasium Saturday 14 December to Wednesday 18 December.

Diverespai will be open from 9.30am to 1.30pm and again from 4.00pm to 8.00pm (except on Wednesday, when closing time is 7.00pm). “We hope it’s a hit”, said Consellera Parellada. “For a lot of kids on the island, Diverespai is the part of Christmas they’re most excited about”.

Youth gather for first plenary of legislative term

ple-infa--ncia-i-joventutjpEarlier today members of the Youth Participatory Council (Consell de Participació de la Infància i la Joventut) met in the Sala d'Actes of local government. Consell de Formentera president Alejandra Ferrer chaired the session, with the island's Department of Youth consellera sitting in as deputy chairwoman. Pupils from Formentera's three primary schools —Mestre Lluís Andreu, Sant Ferran de ses Roques and El Pilar de la Mola— make up the CPIJ's constituent members.

The children started with an overview of their classmates' petitions to Formentera's government. Among the more notable were upgrades in children's parks, public transport, renewable energy and recycling, and issues impacting the everyday lives of local children and young people.

President Ferrer made note of the suggestions and announced that based on requests brought forth at past plenary sittings of the CPIJ, crews will soon start work on a skatepark. With the necessary land already lined up, construction will also begin shortly on children's park in Sant Ferran. "What's exciting about gatherings like today's is that youth are taking part in the decision-making process of local government", pointed out President Ferrer, assuring members of the plenary "we've heard you, and the work starts today".

The young people described their experiences on World Children's Day, 20 November, when they took part in the full-house sitting of the Balearic Parlament. Local heads of commerce, education and culture, and sport, Ana Juan, Susana Labrador and Paula Ferrer, respectively, were also present at the encounter. The CPIJ convenes for two yearly sessions.

Formentera youth to join “Fridays for Future” and global climate strike

cartell-fff1The Consell de Formentera's youth and environment offices are teeing up politically-oriented action to dovetail with Fridays for Future activities at the close of the week. Part of the September programme at the Casal de Joves, “No és una crisi del planeta, és una crisi de la humanitat” (The crisis isn't the planet's, the crisis is humankind's) signals a continuation of earlier bids to support the worldwide youth movement to halt climate change.

The Friday programme will overlap with the global climate strike and related demonstrations round the globe. From 6.30pm in Sant Francesc, islanders can check out kid-friendly workshops and a murals exhibit put together with Formentera Marxa. At 7.30pm, local climate champions can catch a screening of the documentary «Consciencia’t i actua» (Get smart and take action), not to mention a video about the path that rubbish travels on Formentera, and can pick up informational brochures as well.

Taking the stage at 8.30pm, IMPROXOC will illuminate the climate crisis while partner groups like CleanWave, Plastic Free Formentera and Qué Celeste Festival man educational stands spotlighting the importance of sound environmental practices. Participating children and youth will be treated to snacks. This and other actions are aimed at raising awareness while children are still young about the importance of local and global sustainability.
