Formentera asks for tougher surveillance in nature reserve and on coast

foto 2021 Guardia Civil MaritimaConsell de Formentera President Alejandra Ferrer has met with Division General Carlos Crespo of the Coastal Prefecture and maritime police division of the Civil Guard. The officials gathered yesterday evening, with discussion focussing on local needs as the island of Eivissa prepares for a new Maritime Civil Guard office that will additionally be responsible for Formentera’s maritime security. The service’s current headquarters is on Mallorca. President Ferrer spoke to Division General Crespo about the importance of inter-agency collaboration in tracking activities in Ses Salines Nature Reserve and along the rest of the seaboard.

The president explained to Crespo that “Ses Salines needs order, and it needs it fast”. She insisted the rest of the island’s shoreline, where cultural interest landmarks vie for prevalence with protected natural spaces, was in need of reordering as well. And she decried strain placed on meadows of posidonia seagrass, which has been displaced from Ses Salines to areas like Es Pujols and Es Caló.

Participants of the meeting also addressed drinks peddling among seafaring craft, noisy “party boats”, persistent invasion of swimming areas, unauthorised motor equipment and a wave of other non-permitted activity that is dangerous, unhealthy and rooted in unfair competition. Representatives of the Civil Guard were sensitive to the Pine Islands’ need for a local base that delivered improved police presence and patrols.

The Civil Guard chief offered that the days ahead would see several maritime patrol craft, including the Río Segura, turn up in local waters.

Also on hand at the gathering were Colonel Alejandro Hernández Mosquera, who helms the Balearic Civil Guard force, along with Commander Enrique Gómez Bastida and Lieutenant Andrés Garcia.

Local lifeguards get two new lookout and first-aid posts

foto 2021 casetes platgesThe Formentera Department of Interior is pleased to announce that the municipal lifeguard service has acquired two new booths for surveillance and first-aid. Priced at just under €25,237 (VAT included), the structures have a watchtower at the top and two separate areas —one for storage and staff changing rooms, and another with a first aid kit to care for the injured— down below.

Lifeguard service
Financed by the Consell de Formentera, the island’s seaside lifeguard service is operational between 1 May and 31 October. Ten lifeguards and a coordinator oversee safety on local beaches from 1 May until 1 June. The addition of 12 more lifeguards in June brings the total head count to 23, before dipping again to eleven —ten lifeguards and a coordinator— for the entire month of October.

In low season (i.e., May and October) lifeguards patrol Illetes, Llevant and Arenals. In June, July, August and September, in addition to these beaches, Pas des Trucadors, El Tanga, Es Pujols, Cala Saona and Es Caló are monitored as well.

Accessible, cardio care-equipped beaches
Arenals and Es Pujols beaches have access points for swimmers with reduced mobility. The service is available when the green flag flies, from 12 noon to 5.00pm. The service is available 1 May to 31 October at Arenals and 1 June to 30 September in Es Pujols.

Consell and unions agree to rules guiding path to career public service

foto 2021 carrera proThe Consell de Formentera human resources office has joined unions at the negotiating table this week to highlight rules guiding the terms applied to career public servants on the island. The right to seek career employment is guaranteed by Spanish legislation on government employees, and how the Consell implements that legislation was at the centre of a cross-party agreement during the previous legislature.

Human resources chief Paula Ferrer said that “being able to create career public service positions and put Consell employees on equal footing” with workers in other administrations was her “distinct satisfication”. “The rules lay out a transparent and well-defined chance for professional growth”, explained Ferrer, who offered, “When we foster effective and productive workplace performance, public services work better for everyone”.

Employment as a career public servant is optional, and is open to permanent and temporary public servants and full-time contracted employees of the Consell de Formentera, as well as public servants, whether currently on assignment or not, who are in exercise a second profession. Career positions are not open to temporary employees or senior officials.

In each of four stages in the employment cycle, candidates must work a minimum amount of time before attesting the competencies required to advance. Candidates’ performance, experience and degree of professional specialisation will be assessed.

Ferrer insisted that the negotiating table was “fundamental” to municipal relations with unions this legislative term, describing it as “a place of collaboration where we can improve the working conditions of municipal workers”.

Nightly 6.00pm closures at Illetes aimed at curbing beach parties and protecting nature reserve

foto 2021 access tancat cavall den borrasThe Consell de Formentera president’s office reports that points of access to Ses Salines Nature Reserve were closed for the first time at 6.00pm this Wednesday, putting to test a new coordinated effort between the company that oversees access to the reserve, Formentera Department of Mobility and local law enforcement.

After the success of Wednesday’s trials, access points were closed again yesterday and will remain closed for several days. “The goal is to curb the parties and crowds which in recent days had proliferated on beaches in this protected area”, explained local premiere Alejandra Ferrer. “It took us two days”, said the chief, “but we’re there”.

The decision was reached at a meeting of local law enforcement last Wednesday. An executive order released on the heels of that gathering mandates 6pm closures for all points of entry into the Illetes area of Ses Salines. After that point, guests may only exit the reserve unless they have reservations at a restaurant located on the premises.

Recent days have seen access points closed at Camí de sa Guía, Cavall d’en Borràs and Illetes, where crowds occurred. Access to the Llevant area hasn’t been affected, but on Saturday officials pledged “flexibility” and said they were open to extending the measures to new areas and keeping them in place longer if doing so kept the island “safe and protected”.

Informational posters
Awareness-building infographics have been printed in Catalan, Spanish and English and can be found at Tourist Info Points and on the websites of the Formentera Office of Tourism and Consell de Formentera.

Beaches are currently closed between 12 midnight and 6.00pm. Under the new rules, from tomorrow, Saturday, they will be closed from 10.00pm.
