The irony-infused surrealism of Juan Moreno’s ‘día perfecto’

cartell 2021 un dia perfectoThe Formentera Office of Culture is pleased to report that next Monday 30 August at 7.00pm Juan Moreno’s “Un día perfecto” will take up residence at the municipal gallery in Sant Francesc. The show’s stars are the illustrations, although they share the spotlight with creative media like watercolours, paintings and printed reproductions.

Directly or otherwise, “Un día perfecto” revolves around the places, situations and people that typify Formentera. The show finds Moreno continuing to flesh out his personal vision of the island, a surface that he first began to scratch with “Universos paralelos” (2016) and “Fallo del sistema” (2018).

True to the same dynamic, Moreno’s ‘perfect day’ is a surreal world awash in ironic overtones, a universe existing between the real and the fictitious. From Sant Ferran and Fonda Pepe to Plaça de la Constitució in Sant Francesc and La Mola, Moreno leads audiences on a tour of local landmarks populated by a rotating cast of characters, from the imagined to the familiar. Each illustration and painting tell a story, which viewers may freely reinterpret in turn.

Brought up on comic strips and illustrations, Moreno blends academian foundations with influences drawn from pop culture, notably comics, more recently resuscitating, along with co-founder Vicent Ferrer, the defunct hometown fanzine ADN.

Following a 7.00pm opening on Monday 30 August, the exhibition will be on view at “Ajuntament Vell” gallery from 11.00am to 2.00pm and 6.30pm to 9.30pm, Monday to Saturday, 31 August to 11 September.

Mar Novell’s ‘Sòl de Formentera (Una mirada subjectiva)’ settles into ‘Ajuntament Vell’

cartell 2021 sol de formenteraThe Formentera Department of Culture is pleased to report that from 7.00pm, on Monday 16 August, the “Ajuntament Vell” municipal gallery welcomes “Sòl de Formentera (Una mirada subjectiva)”, a collection of collages put together by Mar Novell. The initiative took root in 2020, on photographic strolls which led Novell across the island’s network of roads. The project’s connection to the island runs deep, with Novell’s point of departure and natural habitat both contained within the confines of Formentera.

Novell’s photos offer a comprehensive vision of the ground on Formentera: near the sea, dusty, sandy, asphaulted, rocky, etc. The images find Novell translating a vertical gaze palpably and visibly: eyes look not at the beauty on the horizon but the earth upon which they tread. That gaze acts as a channel, interconnecting the outside world with the world within. It is, thus, a subjective gaze that changes the anonymous image into a feat of artistic framing.

Born in Lleida in 1975, Mar Novell got her education in humanism and culture. Novell’s professional work has seen her in advertising, communication and cultural management.

“Sòl de Formentera” will be on view at the “Ajuntament Vell” gallery from 11.00am to 2.00pm and 7.00pm to 9.00pm, Monday to Saturday, 17 to 28 August 2021. The gallery is closed Sundays and Monday mornings.
