The Formentera Department of Culture reports that from 7.00pm Monday 28 September, the Ajuntament Vell exhibition space will welcome a group show entitled Orígens. Seven local artists —Emilia Brussoni, Maribel Escandell, Robert P Hawkins, Celia Jiménez, Teresa Matilla, Enric Riera and Fran Lucas— put their heads together for an exhibition to which each participant contributed two works of his or her choosing (from acrylic to oil to canvas to mixed media) as well as a text and an object speaking to how the featured artwork came into being.

Regular opening hours for Orígens are 11.00am to 2.00pm and 6.00pm to 8.00pm, 29 September to 10 October. The show’s seven contributing artists belong to the Association of Formentera Artists (ADAF).

The Formentera Department of Culture has unveiled a sneak peak of the L’Illa a Escena programme of performing arts and music for year end 2020. “After the lockdown-era freeze on face-to-face cultural programming, this particular activities bill was extra special”, insisted culture and education chief Susana Labrador. “There is something for everyone in these six shows, and in each one the aim is the same: promote the local cultural scene”.

October
October kicks off with street dance from two members from the Dancescape troupe. Let’s dance about Love enlists the languages of dance, music and spoken word to dig into the multi-stage journey that is love. The resulting atmosphere is one in which both audience and performers are protagonists, identifying with sensations and observing the resonance of others’ feelings, thoughts and experiences with their own. Love is something you feel, something you talk about, something you dance...

The show happens on Saturday 3 October at 7.00pm at Sala de Cultura (Cinema).

Also in October is a production that will have children in stitches. Italino Grand Hotel is a piece of all-ages clown-foolery that explores the tender, moving comedic figure already familiar to anyone who has seen a production from La Tal.

It’s down to Titzina Teatro to close out the month of October with their latest, La Zanja. After nearly twenty years in the game, the theatre troupe presents an original production that is fruit of research and anthropological journalism. Playwrights, directors and actors Pako Merino and Diego Lorca take a tragicomic look at the clash of European and American civilisations and their shared history.

The show happens on Saturday 24 October at 8.30pm at Sala de Cultura (Cinema).

November
On 7 November, one show in particular will walk the line between dance, music, theatre and visual arts. Inspired by paintings and diary entries, Marie Tholon and Adriana Aguilar’s Frida offers up a mise en scène of episodes from the life of the Mexican painter.

Part of the activities bill for International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the show happens on Saturday 7 November at 8.30pm at Sala de Cultura (Cinema).

Little ones will really have a ball with the latest family-friendly production from the iconic troupe La Tartana.  Soñando a Pinocho tells the imagined prelude to the classic tale of Pinocchio, before even Gepetto got to him. This magical tale about solitude and persevering to realise one’s dreams was nominated in 2018 for the Max award for best children’s production.

The show will happen on Saturday 14 November at 6.00pm at Sala de Cultura (Cinema).

December
Completing the L’Illa a Escena series is the musical Tina, la bruixa fina. The lead character in this musical puppet show is an eminently clever young witch who is itching to learn the tricks of her trade. To do it, she’ll need the help of veteran witch Tomassot. A rollicking time for kids of all stripes.

The show happens on Sunday 13 December at 5.30pm at Sala de Cultura (Cinema).

Admission
Tickets at children’s productions are €5 for kids, free for adults. Tickets for other productions are €7, or €5 for viewers under 25. Admission to Let’s dance is €5 for everyone.

Due to the ongoing crisis related to Covid-19, admission is free for the unemployed and currently inactive self-employed individuals.

Cultivating culture
L’Illa a Escena promotes the performing arts with help from the Institut d’Estudis Balearics, and works to foster partnerships between professional dance, theatre and circus troupes, enrich the cultural scene, and ensure access to culture with help from the Spanish culture ministry's Platea programme.

In view of public health protocol and limitations on building capacity, efforts are currently under way to ensure the cleanliness of the Sala de Cultura and fulfilment of other standards. All productions will be hosted in line with current rules and public health directives, and require tickets to be reserved in advance: reserves@conselldeformentera.cat.

Solo imagina, the new exhibit set to take up residence at Centre Antoni Tur ‘Gabrielet’ from this Wednesday, offers islanders artist Daniela Carestia’s particular vision life at the floor of Formentera’s surrounding seas. The show is characterised, among other features, by a rich diversity of colours and recycled materials, and will remain on view until 2 October from 10.30am to 1.30pm and 7.00pm to 9.30pm.

The Formentera Department of Culture reports it is currently accepting applications for funding from non-profit groups that promote culture, community involvement and traditional festivities. €32,000 has been unlocked for the initiative.

Culture and festivities chief Susana Labrador gave special thanks to the groups “doing all they can to put together cultural programming for patron saint celebrations” and offered encouragement to those whose organising efforts have been hamstrung by “ongoing restrictions and other difficulties”.

Review committee
A special committee will be responsible for awarding funding based on a review of applications and supporting documentation. Funding recipients must file taxes and be physically headquartered on the island, not to mention figure on local and regional governments’ registries of civic organisations. Cash disbursements cover the period from November 2019 and October 2020 and can be retroactive.

Applications must be submitted to the Citizen Information Office (OAC) either by calling 971.32.10.87 and requesting an in-person appointment or on the Consell’s online platform, OVAC, by 31 October.
