Island bookworms get look at Rafel Nadal’s ‘summer sea’

cartell 2020 rafel nadalThe Formentera Department of Culture reports that this Monday 31 August, the Marià Villangómez library will host an 8.00pm presentation of author and journalist Rafel Nadal’s Mar d’estiu: Una memòria mediterrània in the Jardí de ses Eres. The event will be presided over by Nadal and Obra Cultural Balear chairwoman Maria Teresa Ferrer.

Among the works penned by 66-year-old Girona native Rafel Nadal i Farreras are his 2011 chronicle of power Els mandarins; the 2012 Premi Josep Pla-winner Quan érem feliços, and a 2013 family saga unfolding between Catalunya and Champagne (France) and entitled Quan en dèiem xampany. His 2015 work La maledicció dels Palmisano was translated into 22 languages, while his most recent effort, 2017’s La senyora Stendhal, has already been translated into five. Currently a staff writer at La Vanguardia, Nadal is also a frequent contributor to RAC1 radio and TV3. At the helm of El Periódico de Catalunya from May 2006 to February 2010, Nadal presided over the newspaper’s selection for numerous awards, including the Catalan Generalitat’s National Communication Prize.

Nadal will present Formentera audiences with “a crash-course on the Mediterranean and life’s little pleasures. It’s an invitation to observe and discover the stories behind the places and the people who inhabit them. (...) An homage to the sea of Nadal’s youth. In the first of three parts, the author sets out to shed light on the reasons of his Mediterranean connection, its true nature and particular significance for Nadal. Part two contains the author’s description of sojourns in Mediterranean backdrops like Stromboli, Icaria, Hydra and Portlligat. (...) The third and final segment finds Nadal narrating his return. It is a reflection on the experience of travel and the Mediterranean’s mark on the course of Western history and culture.”

Partnership for Ràdio Illa content production

foto 2020 conveni ACAFConsell de Formentera president Alejandra Ferrer and the spokesman of the Audiovisual Cultural Association of Formentera (ACAF), Álvaro Mendoza, made official a joint action agreement for content production at public radio station Ràdio Illa. Under the terms of the deal, ACAF will receive €30,000 to produce content for Formentera’s public radio station. Cultura consellera Susana Labrador was also present at the signing.

The Consell owns the broadcasting license for municipal radio station 107.9FM, a public service catering to people of Formentera and designed to  enrich and invigorate local culture.

Production of content for Ràdio Illa has been administered for some time now by ACAF—a non-profit aimed at disseminating local culture, promoting media and encouraging the dynamic engagement of islanders in the local cultural scene.

In 2019, a joint action agreement valued at €50,000 was clinched between the two entities. The Covid-19 crisis and the invocation of emergency orders at the beginning of 2020 made the signing of a new partnership temporarily impossible, and Ràdio Illa received a €20,000 advance in order to continue operating.

Ajuntament Vell exhibition space welcomes Marià Castelló’s “Fragments d’Arquitectura”

cartell 2020 fragments arquitectura 2From 7.00pm on Monday 17 August, Marià Castelló’s Fragments d’Arquitectura will begin a two-week run at the Sala d’Exposicions—Ajuntament Vell. Save for a weekly closure on Sundays and Monday mornings, the display will be open for daily visits from 11.00am to 2.00pm and 7.00pm to 9.00pm.

Castelló describes the project as a reflection on local architecture revelatory of a particular relationship between shelter and buildings in general—“considerations which are hard to appreciate without the analytical help afforded by cross-sectioning”, he asserts. “Fragments d’Arquitectura can additionally be seen as a collection of sculptures that repurpose the geometrical proportions of original buildings — even at the risk of abstraction: we’re seeing things that neither photos nor on-site visits can show”.
