Ajuntament Vell welcomes 'Naturart', Lola Raya's showcase of naturally sustainable clothing collections

The Office of Culture of the Consell de Formentera is pleased to report that from 21 February to 4 March, the "Ajuntament Vell" Exhibition Space will host "Naturart", an exhibition from artist Lola Raya. In this exhibition the artist displays her collections of hand-painted clothes made with hemp fabric. The opening is programmed Monday 20 February at 6.00pm.

In the words of the artist, "This project is the fruit of intense investigation in search of a suitable fabric. I needed a garment that was sustainable and as natural as possible and that allowed me to work with a brush and get a different and innovative texture, and that turned out to be hemp."

Raya will present two collections: "Thiancoumalal" (inspired by her first exhibition of pictures and focused on a village in Senegal) and "Alma Salada" (inspired by the sea and life on the Formentera seafloor). An accompanying video highlights the brief accounts of personalities from the world of sustainable fashion, engineers and researchers in search of new regenerative fibres, and scholars and activists who dedicate their studies to caring for the planet.

The Terrassa-born artist began her professional studies in fashion design, dressmaking and industrial pattern making at that city's Escola Maria Auxiliadora in 1980. In 2014 when she began focusing on art more professionally, training and taking drawing and painting classes at Bloc Centre of Artistic Expression in the same city. In August 2019 at MASTER-D Academy in Barcelona, she decided to undertake the slow fashion with the "Lola Raya" label, creating sustainable fashion using hemp fabric, where she merges conscious fashion, painting and music (BSO Thiancoumalal).

The exhibition will open at 6.00pm, Monday 20 February. The collections can be visited 11.00am to 2.00pm and 6.00pm to 8.00pm, Monday to Saturday, 21 February to 4 March, in the "Ajuntament Vell" Exhibition Space. The space will be closed Sundays, holidays and Monday mornings.

"The very special programme will see twenty-some students of Xumeu Joan performing traditional singing techniques like cant redoblat and cant glosat solo, in dialogue and in groups", explained Alejandra Ferrer, vice-president and education councillor. "The idea behind the event, of which Xumeu Joan has been the driving force for years, is to preserve Formentera's oral tradition by passing it on to new singers and the island at large", added the councillor, who thanked both Joan and his students "for the great work they do to keep this tradition alive."

Traditional music workshop
This year's Cantada Pagesa will come alongside a workshop on traditional musical instruments like castanets, drum and flute. Vicent Ferreret will lead the class in the Consell de Formentera auditorium, or Sala de Plens, next to the Formentera Day Centre. The 236-page book shows the Pine Islands' endemic lizard in its natural habitat, with photographs by Candela and educational texts by Cirer, who holds a PhD in biology and is a professor of social sciences.

The immensely visual work serves as a reminder that the Sargantana pitiusa is one of the Pine Islands' most beloved natural treasures and, as the only terrestrial vertebrate truly native to Eivissa and Formentera, of capital importance. The ultimate goal of the book is to raise public awareness of the risk of extinction which the lizards currently face. Among the leading causes are invasive snakes that globalised freight and shippig brought to the islands in 2003. The book is a reminder that safeguarding our local lizards is everyone's responsibility.

'Els contes de la Rosa Rodamón' kicks off storytelling series at Reading Spot of Sant Ferran Cultural Space

The Office of Culture of the Consell de Formentera is pleased to report that, the Reading Spot (Punt de Lectura) at the Sant Ferran Cultural Space (Espai Cultural de Sant Ferran) will host "Els contes de la Rosa Rodamón", a storytelling session by Anakrónica, from 5.00pm, Thursday 9 February. This is the first instalment of a storytelling series organised between Libraries of Formentera and La Panera Vermella.

Giuseppe Macchione and Silvia Marote Mayans founded La Panera Vermella out of a desire to lead leisure activities for zero- to six-year-olds. The production encourages play and exploration in the stage in which children begin developing cognitive, social, affective and motor skills. The idea, they say, is to involve children and their families in stimulating activities adapted to early developmental stages, in playful spaces for sharing, playing, experimenting, relating and interacting.

Three-part storytelling series: February, March and April
This series consists of three storytelling sessions, the first in February, the second in March and the last in April. "Els contes de la Rosa Rodamón" is the first instalment. After a long journey, Rosa Rodamón has finally arrived on Formentera. Her suitcases are brimming with stories and songs that she has collected during her travels round the world. With the help of her little ukulele, her stories and her songs, Rosa will see to it that every last one of her listeners has a good time. The show also includes puppets, paper masks and a lot of characters hidden in Rosa's suitcases.

This first story time comes courtesy of Anakronika, the artistic name of Anna Moya, a multifaceted artist born in Barcelona. An actress and professional musician, she has also worked as a director, author and theatre instructor in several schools and civic centres in Barcelona and Madrid. Her stage performances have taken her to Mercat de les Flors, the Coliseum, Sala Muntaner and Club Capitol in Barcelona and she has participated in theatre festivals like La Mercè and FiraTàrrega.
