Local musicians give outdoor concerts —‘musical aperitifs’— every Sunday at noon

cartell 2020 aperitus musicals Earlier today the Formentera Department of Culture announced details about “Aperitius musicals”—a new outdoor concert series on the 2020 autumn/winter calendar. Every Sunday from noon till two, local acts will play in distinct public areas. Performances will alternate between Casa del Poble de la Mola, Carrer Guillem de Montgrí plaza in Sant Ferran and the patio of Casa de sa Senieta in Sant Francesc.

Culture chief Susana Labrador tied the origins of the initiative to a petition from local association Formentera Musical: “We want to enrich the dynamism of the local cultural scene beyond the summer season, particularly a year like this one when the Covid-19 crisis has put the sector on such shaky ground”. “It’s about supporting local musicians, but it’s also about creating options for open-air cultural and musical activities. We hope that this is one many islanders can enjoy, and we know people will be respectful of public health protocol”, added Labrador.

The series starts Sunday 1 November and runs until Sunday 27 December:

Collaborations
This musical initiative is presented by Formentera Musical and Consell de Formentera. Concerts will follow the same format as Música a les Places this summer: roped off audience area, chairs where audience members can sit and Covid-19 safety protocol in effect.

“Orientalismos” arrives Monday at ‘Ajuntament Vell’ gallery

cartell 2020 orientalismos This Monday at 6.00pm, Orientalismos will take up residence at the Sala d’Exposicions “Ajuntament Vell”. The exhibit is open to the public —barring weekly closures on Sunday and Monday— from 11.00am to 2.00pm and 6.00pm to 8.00pm until 7 November.

Orientalismos is the union of Aida Miró and Simona Marziani, two artists and lovers of travel, nature and wide-ranging cultural influences, but it is also an invitation, beckoning visitors to join its creators on a tour of the ample range of possibilities offered by resin.

The paintings and artistic objects which Miró and Marziani exhibit integrate and harmonise that which surrounds them: nature; colourful, original characters; music and dance and the meeting of the free spirits of distinct cultures and countries, particularly those of the East (meditation, Zen, Buddhism, yoga, mandalas...). These things play their part in the creative process and exercise a discernible influence on the two artists.

Eivissa-born Aida Miró has lived in New York for the last six years, giving classes and working out of her studio in the Bronx. She received her undergraduate’s in fine arts and a doctorate in education, writing a dissertation on contemporary Japanese butoh dance that received cum laude mention from the Autonomous University of Madrid.

Simona Marziani was born in Milan, where she started illustrating and designing trompe l’oeils after studying art. Focusing energy on her own creative work since 1995, Marziani lives on Eivissa. She is a lover of Eastern philosophy, travel and nature.

Winter hours in effect at La Mola lighthouse

foto 2020 far de la mola The Formentera Department of Culture reports that low-season hours will henceforth be observed at El Far de la Mola. The lighthouse will be open for visits 10.00am to 2.00pm, Tuesday to Saturday, with weekly closures Sundays and Mondays.

A monument to civil engineering, La Mola’s lighthouse was designed by Emili Pou Bonet and completed in 1861. Today the building houses a space which is devoted to culture and to showcasing the island’s maritime heritage. It is divided into two clearly distinct exhibition spaces. The permanent exhibition explores its main focus —the sea— from a variety of angles: the marine environment, natural resources management, navigation and light signals. A second space is dedicated to temporary art exhibits.

General admission is €4.50, though residents of the Balearic Islands, youth under 18 and unemployed individuals enter free (pensioners and students get in at a reduced rate of €2.50).

Formentera celebrates All Saints’ Day with screenings of fantasy and terror shorts

cartell 2020 curtmetratges The Formentera Department of Culture reports that on Friday 30 October, islanders are invited to an evening of fantasy- and terror-themed short films organised by the Barcelona International and Short Animation Film Festival (Mecal) in association with the Formentera Film Festival.

Screenings will start at 7.30pm in the Sala de Cultura (Cinema). Admission is free, but reservations are required to attend (email requests may be sent to reserves@conselldeformentera.cat). Public health measures will be observed.

Shorts in the special evening of terror will be screened from Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands, Norway, Peru, United Kingdom and France.

Mecal is regarded as one of the most firmly-rooted of Spain’s film festivals, with quality, diversity and originality considered trademark characteristics. The All Saints’ Day evening of screenings has been put together in association with Formentera Film Festival, whose organisers have actively sought collaborative projects with distinct festivals since the very start of FFF. From 25 to 27 November, the organising arm of FFF will join forces with Espai F to host Cinema als quatre vents, where guests of La Mola’s Casa del Poble can catch jury favourites from the 21st Soria International Short Film Fest.

Consell offers courses and workshops for adults

cartell 2020 cursos 2 The Department of Culture and Education and Department of Commerce of the Consell de Formentera present the autumn and winter catalogue of adult courses and workshops. The covid-19 crisis, new sanitary and safety protocol and capacity restrictions mean a number of offerings —Teresa Matilla’s craft and painting clinic, Aaron Keydar’s woodcutting course and Silvia Jobani’s pottery workshop— will only be able to accommodate previously enrolled students.

Enrolment is still open for the beginners’ course on digital photography by Jose Antonio Arribas. Eight hours of instruction will be spread across two units, 23–28 November and 14–19 December. Classes will blend theory with hands-on learning so students can learn a range of photo techniques inside the classroom and out. This course is for anyone who wants to get the most out of their camera or to dive deep into an array of photographic disciplines. Tuition is €60, with a 30% reduction available for students under 30 and retirees.
