Formentera activates awareness push to protect local livestock

The Formentera Office of Rural Environment has published an informational poster to remind animal owners that, as a safety measure for both pets and livestock, unaccompanied dogs must remain on their owner's property at all times.

To keep pets from running away or getting lost or run over, and to ensure the safety of livestock, islanders with dogs are reminded that these animals may not leave the house alone and must be on a lead whilst in public spaces. Islanders who see dogs off leash or without an owner are encouraged to phone the pound at 630.083.128. Featured on the posters is a watercolour painting by artist Fran Lucas where a leashed dog can be seen walking with its owner while nearby sheep stand in the shade of a fig tree.

Posters will go up in the island's main display cases, veterinary clinics and rural areas. So far this year the Consell de Formentera has received three complaints of dog attacks on island livestock: two in Sant Francesc (La Miranda/Cala Saona and Porto-Salè) and one in La Mola. A total of seven sheep were killed and two were injured. In addition, in recent weeks some livestock owners have reported seeing off-leash dogs on their farms.

Councillor of Rural Affairs Josep Marí insisted that, for the island's livestock farmers, the damage is incalculable, as the loss of animals is compounded by the distress of knowing one's property has been trespassed upon and one's livestock has been harmed. Marí underscored the important role of livestock owners, insisting the small farmers "preserve the island's traditions and landscape".

Municipal ordinance

The local ordinance on pets bans "unaccompanied and off-leash dogs from public areas" and indicates that "owners of dogs whose temperament so requires must fit their pets with a muzzle". The ban also includes information on legislation concerning potentially dangerous dogs, defining the term as "markedly aggressive canines and those having attacked people or other animals".

Book presentation: 'Eivissa i Formentera. Sargantanes i illes'

cartell 2021 sargantanesThis Wednesday 10 November at 8.00pm in the Marià Villangómez Library, author Antònia Cirer will tell crowds about her book "Eivissa i Formentera. Sargantanes i illes" . Cirer will discuss Eivissa and Formentera's characteristic lizard, Podarcis pityusensis, and describe the most peculiar features of its biology. She will trace the origins of the current configuration of islets and islands in the Pine Islands archipelago, given those origins have a bearing on the living things that call the archipelago home today.

For lizards, Eivissa and Formentera possess a diversity of factors known as ecological conditionners, which explains their profusion of colours. Humans often regard Formentera as being marked by a certain degree of ecological uniformity, but the vastly diverse ecological conditionners have a direct bearing on the lives, body shape and, above all, colour of lizards. Cirer will devote particular attention to the lizards of Formentera, focusing on the distinct populations that live at three ends of the island, their varying types of coloration, and how the colours on lizards' backs vary as observers travel from north to south.

Formentera becomes first European destination to sign UNESCO's Sustainable Tourism Commitment with Expedia

foto 2021 sostenibilitatThe Formentera Office Tourism has signed an agreement with the online travel agency Expedia to disseminate and promote the UNESCO Sustainable Tourism Commitment. Formentera is the first European destination to join the collaborative effort, and the second worldwide after Thailand.

“This agreement is about encouraging sustainable and responsible travel to Formentera, seeking ever greater environmental awareness and optimising sustainable practices in travel and the public and private sectors”, said Vice President and Councillor of Tourism Alejandra Ferrer. The deal includes specific measures to develop sustainability on the island, and is in line the objectives of the Tourism Reactivation Plan 2021/22, adopted by local government in consensus with the sector.

The arrangement focuses on fomenting sustainable and responsible travel by attracting quality visitors who respect the environment and generate a return for Formentera. It is also aimed at promoting sustainability with new and positive destination experiences and emerging secondary experiences. It additionally seeks to mitigate the negative environmental and cultural impacts of travel and sightseeing, establish Formentera as a leader among sustainable destinations (related projects include safeguards on posidonia, the ban on plastic bags, the promotion of sustainable mobility and more) and set an example for the travel sector in its broadest sense, nationally and internationally.

Expedia Group promotes travel around the world and will now highlight Formentera as an island that cares about sustainability. The company will bring visibility to the private sector's commitment to environmental protection by highlighting whether particular stakeholders have reduced single-use plastics, if they support local communities and culture, have cut waste and improved their management of energy and water.

The idea is also to take advantage of industry experience and digital technology to create a sustainable framework on Formentera that develops the local economy, especially in tourism, and to promote policies for the inclusion and safety of travellers.

Consell talks upgrades on Avinguda de Miramar and Carrer de s'Espalmador with residents of Es Pujols

foto 2021 reunio vesins es pujolsA

Consell de Formentera President Ana Juan, Vice President and Councillor of Tourism Alejandra Ferrer, Councillor of Infrastructure Josep Marí and Department Technician Xico Ribas have met with residents of Es Pujols to review the planned upgrades and elimination of architectural barriers on Avinguda de Miramar and Carrer de s'Espalmador.

The €1.3 million project started this week and is due for completion on 1 May. Changes will affect the section of Avinguda de Miramar stretching from the access roundabout to the junction with Carrer de s'Espalmador. From there, work will continue along Carrer de s'Espalmador to the intersection of that street with Carrer des Fonoll Marí.

These two streets will be remodeled in accordance with mobility criteria in Es Pujols, namely, streets will be one-way with a single lane of traffic, and a new bike lane will run the length of the area. Beautification measures will include new street furniture and lighting, and sewerage and telephone infrastructure will upgraded as well.

Councillor Marí described the project as "in the same line as upgrades last winter in Es Pujols's centre". The goal, said Marí, is "aesthetic improvement; to make the town more pedestrian friendly and deliver a boost to the tourism sector".
