Consell offers free Catalan course to thirty recent arrivals in primary school

The Formentera Office of Language Policy (Conselleria de Politica Lingùistica/CPL) is pleased to announce it will host a free course for primary school pupils new to the Catalan language. Approximately thirty children will be divided into two small groups: one for years three and four and another for years five and six. Classes start Monday 8 November in the Catalan room of the old Sant Ferran school.

Councillor of Language Policy Raquel Guasch stressed the initiative was about "facilitating the support that children and their families receive, and making sure that resources to grow familiar with the language are within their reach". Councillor Guasch said the idea was "to associate Catalan with a positive experience through dynamic and playful activities, and encourage schoolchildren to use the language outside the classroom".

Today the Formentera Office of Youth (Conselleria de Juventut) unveiled its programme of activities to celebrate World Children's Day on 20 November. All month long special activities will help children and young people to celebrate their day, a commemoration of adoption of the Universal Declaration of the Rights of the Child (1959) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989).

Councillor of Youth Affairs Vanessa Parellada described the programme as "extremely varied" and insisted, "We want all kids and teens on the island to celebrate their day in one way or another, but we want all islanders, no matter their age, to participate was well". "Protecting children and young people and defending their rights are cross-cutting issues, and diverse activities bills such as the one we are presenting today are a testament to that".

Skate park activities

For the first time ever, the Casal de Joves has put together a day of activities at the Sant Francesc skate park. The event will take place Saturday 6 November between 5.00pm and 8.30pm. Experienced skaters will face off in a tricks contest with a prize for the two finalists. There will also be an exhibition by ten-year-old Leonardo Vinicius Cuervo and Naia Laso, Spain's 12-year-old champion of park skateboarding.

The presentation happens with support from the regional chapter of UNICEF and the Balearic Office of Children and Adolescents (Oficina Balear de la Infància i l'Adolescència/OBIA). All Formentera schools will participate in the event.

Vívete seeks to promote human values and tools for sound, conscious personal development.

Formentera activates campaign to check trichinosis

The Formentera Office of Agriculture and Livestock (Conselleria d'Agricultura i Ramaderia/CAR) has lauched a push to test meat from domestic hog slaughters in a bid to control spread of trichinosis.

Trichinosis is a parasitic disease people can catch by eating raw or undercooked pig, boar and horse meat and sausage like sobrassada which hasn’t undergone thermic treatment. The best way to avoid getting triquinosis is to test pork from traditional hog slaughters.

To perform the test, from 1 November to 30 March 2021 interested islanders can visit the CAR at Centre Antoni Tur "Gabrielet" between 9.00am and 2.00pm, send an email toagricultura@conselldeformentera.cat or telephone 971 321 087. CAR staff will provide material and instructions on sample collection and information from partner veterinarians who test for triquinosis to ensure meat is safe for consumption.

Councillor of Interior Josep Marí, Chief of Formentera Local Police Félix Ramos and Police Liaison Officer Pilar Daviu visited the Eivissa campus of the University of the Balearic Islands for an award ceremony hosted by the Institute of Public Security of the Balearic Islands (Institut de Seguretat Pùblica de les Illes Balears/ISPIB), a division of the Directorate General of Emergencies and Interior.

Special honours were awarded to the Consell de Formentera and to the town councils of Eivissa, Sant Antoni de Portmany, Santa Eulària des Riu and Sant Josep de sa Talaia; two certificates of public acknowledgement for outstanding efforts and more than ten years of service went to liaison officers in the towns of Eivissa and Sant Josep, and special mention was received by the territorial coordinator of the Eivissa Local Police Department's Road Education programme, Alberto Serrano.

Eleven distinctions highlighted the work of Pine Islands local police for their dedication to the programmes which the ISPIB coordinates, particularly during the pandemic. Councillor Marí wished to “congratulate Officers Daviu and Serrano for their achievements and the accolades received, as well as our island's entire force for their extra efforts in times which the pandemic made particularly trying”.

The Director General of Emergencies and Interior, Jaume Barceló, underscored the officers' vocation for public service, especially during the pandemic, and said that “from the moment COVID-19 pushed us to activate the Territorial Civil Protection Plan, our local departments have been key to controlling the pandemic through patrols and enforcement of measures to mitigate the effects of the disease and stop its spread”.
