Earlier today Consell de Formentera President Alejandra Ferrer and Councillor of Sport Paula Ferrer unveiled details about the twelfth Formentera Half-Marathon and ninth 8K Sant Ferran-to-La Savina Fun Run set to unfold this Saturday 9 October. The two races will see nearly three thousand athletes of varying nationalities converge on the island, making the event the largest on Formentera's calendar of fitness fixtures. Also on hand at the press conference were Xisco Mateu, director of the regional Agència d'Estratègia Turística (AETIB); Manuel Hernández, director of organising group Unisport Consulting; Alex Marí, commercial director of Trasmapi, and Carles Verde, director of CaixaBank's commercial division in the Pine Islands, one of the premier sponsors of the races.

The kick-off for both trials has been set at 4.30pm: as is customary, the 21K Half-Marathon will start at La Mola lighthouse and the 8K run will begin in Sant Ferran, with registered participants numbering 1,750 for the former and 1,150 for the latter.

President Ferrer described the races, which were called off last year on account of the pandemic, as having "a special place in athletes' hearts". "Plus they're the perfect opportunity for participants and their companions to enjoy Formentera —our nature, beaches and gastronomic offer— in October."

October, sporting events aplenty

The Councillor of Sport gave praise to the organisers, forces of law and order, health workers and volunteers who make the events, which she described as "benchmarks in Spain and worldwide", possible. She also highlighted the other sporting events still on the docket like the Marnaton (16 October) and 6th Volta Cicloturista and 27th BTT La Mola (22–24 October) which together will draw some five thousand adepts of sport to Formentera's shores. Ferrer also apologised and asked for patience amid the attendant road closures that will intermittently block vehicle traffic.

Lastly, Unisport Consulting's Manuel Hernández marvelled at the scale of the event, for which few spots remain, and drew attention to the fact that early signups for next year's half-marathon already total 700.

Intermittent road closures

To ensure the safety of the participants, the following roads will be closed to vehicle traffic on Saturday 9 October:

·PM 820 (Avinguda de la Mola), between Can Blaiet restaurant and La Mola lighthouse [2.00pm to 5.30pm]
·PM 820, between Sant Ferran and La Mola [4.00pm to 7.00pm]
·PM 820-2, between Sant Ferran and La Savina by way of Es Pujols [3.00pm to 7.30pm]

Formentera to subsidise up to 50% of property tax for homes that harness solar energy

The Formentera Office of Economy and Finance is pleased to report that from 2022, owners of homes incorporating solar-power for their energy needs will see their property taxes reduced up to 50%. The measure received initial approval when local decision-makers gathered for the island’s monthly plenary assembly and is now pending final approval.

FOEF chief Bartomeu Escandell said the rebate was about “promoting sustainable energy and helping us care for our environment” and described it as “part and parcel of local government has been advocating for years”.

Homeowners who receive a 40% rebate can save as much as €600 over four years if they have existing or future installations generating at least 4 kW of electricity and can provide proof from the installer. Installations rigged to feed surplus electricity back into the grid will mean 50% rebates for a maximum of €700 over four years.

Approvals fast-tracked for new installations

The Consell de Formentera has also simplified things for islanders interested in equipping their homes with solar-panel installations. Collector panels can be installed have only to notify local government and deliver related documentation to the OAC or OVAC at least one working day in advance. The tax on such installations is also being subsidised by up to 90%.

Every Monday, OAC moves to La Mola

foto 2021 oac a la molaAThis morning Consell de Formentera chief Alejandra Ferrer, second-in-command Ana Juan and general services councillor Bartomeu Escandell paid a visit to the Citizen Information Office (Oficina d'Atenció Ciutadana, OAC) during its new weekly hours of operation, Monday from 9.00am to 2.00pm, at La Mola's Casa del Poble.

The aim, said President Ferrer, is to bridge the gap between local government and the island's most remote village, La Mola, and save area residents a trip to Sant Francesc. Ferrer indicated that visitors will be able to access the same services as those offered at the OAC in Sant Francesc.

The Councillor of General Services said the change was possible thanks to the increased digitalisation and growing online presence of local government government: “All we need is a computer that's connected our system and to the Internet and we can deliver these services to any corner of the island”.

Whether at the OAC's brick-and-mortar location on Carrer Ramon Llull, 6, or through the virtual office (OVAC), islanders can do things like add their name to the municipal register, pay fees, register for courses and more. There is also a one-stop window service where formalities involving other government agencies can be processed.

Formentera celebrates local law enforcement

foto 2021 condecoracionsCToday, 3 October, the Consell de Formentera honoured local agents of law and order. This year’s celebration was marked by special shows of appreciation for Officer Carlos Malberti Moragón, whose exemplary record spans more than fifteen years of public service on the force, and for Officers Marc Aragay Torres, Marc Roig Ferrer, José Antonio Perera Escandell and Javier Torrens Trias, for their work to stop criminal trafficking of migrants.

In remarks, Consell de Formentera President Alejandra Ferrer extended kudos for the winners to the entire local force, whom she thanked for the extra effort required this year given the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated restrictions officers were called on to enforce. Ferrer spoke about the need for more manpower to enforce environmental regulations and additional agents from the Balearic Directorate General of Emergencies, Labour and Health, reasoning, “Local police can’t be in charge of everything.”

Councillor of Interior Josep Marí, too, praised the entire local police force for their tireless work this summer. “We know we have to work to add more officers to the local force. Today we are taking steps to deliver more training courses, make the hiring process faster and more agile and make sure officers can stay where they received training”.

Officer Carlos Malberti Morogán was honoured for more than fifteen years of outstanding service and a record free of disciplinary action.

Officers Marc Aragay Torres, Marc Roig Ferrer and José Antonio Perera Escandell received the green badge of merit for outstanding efforts on 24 July. The men’s actions helped lead to the arrest of a ship captain who has been charged with illegal trafficking of migrants. It is the second time the individual has been accused of the crime, and aggravating circumstances include putting passengers in danger and for trafficking minors, some very young.

Officers Marc Roig Ferrer and Javier Torrens Trias were honoured for outstanding efforts on 19 September, when they successfully directed actions that led to the arrest of two boat captains for the alleged criminal trafficking of migrants, with the aggravating circumstance of putting passengers, some of them minors and women, in danger. It was Roig’s second such distinction that day.

The ceremony was held at Hotel Formentera Playa and attended by local central government envoy Enrique Sánchez Navarrete, members of the National Police and Civil Guard, as well as Vice-President Ana Juan, cabinet and opposition councillors, and family and friends of the local officers.
