Stepping up natural push to curb mosquitoes and midges in Ses Salines marshes

This September the Formentera Office of Environment has bolstered a campaign to contain numbers of mosquitoes and midges in marshy areas of the Ses Salines Nature Reserve and in sites of accumulated fresh water. The all-natural substance will be sprayed for nine days, instead of four as originally planned, and operations will include more days in October.

The FOE, which oversees pest control operations in the reserve, reminds islanders to keep a close eye on places water tends to accumulate because these are sites larvae typically develop. Common offenders include saucers under flower pots, animal troughs, cisterns and ponds.

Record number of participants at 8th Formentera Triathlon

foto 2021 formen triatloConsell de Formentera President Alejandra Ferrer and Councillor of Sport Paula Ferrer presented details today about the eighth Formentera Triathlon, including the categories of Sprint and Olympic, set to take place this Saturday in Es Pujols. The race additionally doubles as the Balearic Olympic Triathlon Championship. Participants in the Sprint (750 m swim, 20 km bike and 5 km run) will start at 2.15pm, while Olympic contenders (1,500 m swim, 40 km bike and 10 km run) will start at 4.00pm. There will be individual and team events in both modalities. Also on hand at the presentation were Xisco Mateu, manager of the Tourism Strategy Agency of the Balearic Islands (AETIB); Manuel Hernández, the director of organising entity Unisport Consulting, and Alex Marí, the commercial director of Trasmapi, the event’s main sponsor.

President Ferrer expressed satisfaction at being able to celebrate the Formentera Triathlon again after last year’s event was called off on account of the pandemic. “We’re thrilled to bring back a trial which, in eight years, has put down deep roots on the island”, said the president, adding, “May participants and accompanying friends and families enjoy Formentera in October, with all the programming it comes with”.

Nearly 340 registered participants, a record turnout

The chief of the Formentera Office of Sport highlighted a current participant count of 340 — “a record number of participants”, said Councillor Ferrer, who indicated registrations remained open at www.triatlonformentera.com. “The figures serve to motivate us to continue working to organise events and, above all, to spread the spirit and feeling of sport throughout the island”. Finally, the councillor praised “all the groups that have played a hand in the race’s evolution” and apologised for any inconveniences caused by traffic restrictions during the hours of the event.

And lastly, Manuel Hernández of Unisport Consulting underscored “Formentera’s commitment to sport and events like this and the Half-Marathon” —scheduled for 9 October— “which put the island on the map in terms of major fitness fixtures”. He also highlighted this year’s record turnout and pointed out that aspiring participants could continue to register until 30 September.

Road closures

For this Saturday’s race, from 1.30pm to 6.00pm, road closures will impact PM-820 from the cemetery turn-off to the Sant Ferran roundabout, as well as PM-820-2 from the Sant Ferran roundabout to the Es Pujols roundabout. Likewise, parking will be prohibited on Carrers S'Espalmador, S'Aigua Dolça and Punta Prima on Saturday 2 October between 8.00am and 8.00pm.

Formentera asks for €4M in EU funding for 6 projects promoting sustainability, energy efficiency, digital transition and competitiveness

The Formentera Office of Economy and Formentera Tax Office have submitted six projects to the Ministry of Tourism in response to a special call for submissions to a European Union financing scheme known as the Programme of Tourist Destination Plans for Sustainability. According to Bartomeu Escandell, the councillor for both departments, the island has requested a total of €4 million for actions related to green and sustainable transition, improved energy efficiency, the digital transition and competitiveness.

For her part, Consell de Formentera President Alejandra Ferrer remarked that the projects “leverage new technologies to achieve a cleaner, more energy-efficient and more competitive island and to improve the quality of life of residents and the experience of visitors”.

Green and sustainable transition

The first plans for which a grant of €300,000 has been requested involve smart access via Cavall den Borràs, Ses Illetes and Llevant beaches to the Ses Salines Natural Reserve. Since 2008, limited controls have been in place on vehicles entering the reserve, an enclave of immense ecological and scenic value. The plan’s architects propose harnessing new technologies to enhance and render more efficient of the existing process of manual controls. The aim is to ameliorate the experience of tourists and islanders accessing when the area and to safeguard the environmental and natural values it has historically represented.

Valued at €1 million, the second grant would fund plans for a new treatment and recycling plant for construction waste. Architects of the plan say waste management is increasingly key to ensuring efficient government actions, and that reusing local products and by-products is increasingly vital to reducing transport costs and transport-related pollution. This situation of cost overruns and excessive pollution is particularly concerning on islands, where products consumed must be imported, with the cost and CO₂-emission increases that such transport represents. The treatment and recycling plant would serve to transform waste from construction operations into by-products usable for public and private urban improvement and upgrades, drastically cutting CO2 emissions associated with continuous maritime travel, thereby reducing the attendant carbon footprint and growing the circular economy by fomenting locally-sourced products.

Improving energy efficiency

The third, €1.2 million grant would optimise use of public spaces and create a new source of renewable energy thanks to solar panel-equipped pergolas —the first would go up alongside arterials in Sant Francesc and Sant Ferran— featuring recharge points for electric vehicles. Part of Formentera’s commitment to replacing dirty energies with renewable ones and vehicles that pollute the environment with other, more eco-friendly options, the project would support more sustainable mobility, reduce the island’s energy dependence on outside sources, grow the Formentera’s fleet of electric vehicles and improve air quality.

Digital transition

A grant of €200,000 euros was additionally requested for a project dubbed Big Data Turística, Formentera — a model of tourism using mass data and in which decision-making in support of good governance is underpinned by data that are structured, dynamic and obtained in real time.

The proposal envisions a Smart Tourism System and smart destination system, mobilising data obtained with artificial intelligence —featured visions vary from socio-demographic, economic, environmental and tourism, to culture and heritage, mobility, education and sports and resident experience— to ensure competitive advantages for the destination in question.

The island requested a fifth, €300,000 grant for formentera.eco. The funding would give a boost to technical aspects of the scheme which, since 2019, has sought to regulate incoming vehicles and those which are driven on Formentera in summer.

Competitiveness

The sixth and final project, for which Formentera requested a grant in the amount of €1 million, involves road upgrades and new infrastructure in La Savina and Es Ca Marí. It marks a continuation of a host of initiatives which in recent years have expanded local infrastructure and delivered road improvements and pedestrian-only zones in urban centres. Such actions have offered a host of benefits, from making towns more accessible to local residents and removing vehicle traffic from within town centres, to reactivating commercial activity and enhancing appeal for tourists.

Workshop aims to make language and local media more equitable

foto 2021 llenguatge no sexistaYesterday afternoon the Formentera Office of Equality and LGTBI Affairs put together a training session on ‘Inclusive and non-sexist language’ for personnel at local media outlets and other islanders whose jobs involve communication. The workshop was given by the FOEL department liaison, Sofia Vergara Levitt.

Councillor Vanessa Parellada started by welcoming attendees of the workshop, which was included in the island’s first Equality Plan (2019-2022). Among the stated objectives are improving perceptions of women and fomenting the use of non-sexist language.

“At the government level, we want to promote actions that support a more egalitarian society”, said Parellada. “This time we’re asking for the media to get involved too so we can all do some soul-searching and see where we can make changes to speak in a way that’s more inclusive”, she continued.

The talk included a colloquium and ideas exchange and gave participants the chance to capacity build and discuss among participants, whom Parellada thanked for their attendance.

Formentera unveils autumn and winter catalogue of courses and workshops for adults

The Formentera Offices of Culture and Education are pleased to present the offer of courses and workshops for adults in autumn and winter. In the words of Councillor of Education and Culture Susana Labrador, “The goal is to offer a wide variety to satisfy islanders’ demand for training and leisure options”.

First off, two classics —creation and painting by Teresa Matilla and woodcarving by Aaron Keydar— are back. Teresa Matilla’s “artistic classroom” supplies students with knowledge of a range of painting techniques and foments creativity, personal growth and emotion. The evening workshop will take place from November to March. Aaron Keydar, for his part, has taught his woodcarving clinic since 2014, and this year it will be held on Tuesday and Friday evenings from November to March.

Both courses will be held in Sant Ferran’s new Espai Cultural.

José Antonio Arribas’s digital photography course for beginners will also return in 2021. Offering a total of 12 hours of instruction, the course runs from 22 November to 2 December. Classes will be both theory-based and hands-on, giving students the chance to learn various photographic techniques inside and outside the classroom. The course is designed for anyone who wants to get the most out of their reflex camera or work in depth with an array of photographic disciplines.

The photography course will be held at the Marià Villangómez library.

Early enrolment
Early enrolment (preinscripcions) can be completed at the Citizen Information Office (OAC), or online on the OVAC from 1 October. Retired people and young people under 25 get a 30% discount on tuition.
