This Saturday 12 Dec., La 22 performs on Formentera

cartell 2020 la 22The Formentera Culture and Holidays Department reports that Saturday 12 December will feature a performance by musical group La 22 in the Sa Senieta festival tent in Sant Francesc. Tickets for the 8.00pm show can be booked by sending an email to reserves@conselldeformentera.cat, with 54-person capacity restriction and other safety measures like assigned seating, no food or drinks and mandatory masks in place too.

Councillor Susana Labrador reminded islanders that this Christmas season would be different. “It’s important we enjoy these celebrations, but Covid-19 protocol are non-negotiable”, she insisted. The culture and holidays councillor tied the programme to one of her department’s pandemic-era priorities: “Supporting hometown musicians and artists”.

La 22
La 22 (full name “La 22 Formentera”) have been known for Latin rhythms ever since trombone player José Guzmán started the group in the summer of 2010.

Steeped in musical influences ranging from quartet, cumbia and merengue to bachata and salsa, the group puts their unique imprint on the likes of Marc Anthony, Celia Cruz, Compay Segundo, Alejandra Sanz, Pink Floyd, Pablo Alborán, Gloria Gaynor, Juanes, Luis Miguel, Daft Punk, Jose Luis Perales and more.

After a handful of local gigs, the group quickly emerged as the revelation of summer 2012, building their name at traditional celebrations and venues across Eivissa and Formentera and, by 2015, cementing their status as the Balearic kings of Latin music.

Among the songs in the set at La 22’s 12 December performance will be songs off their latest effort, 2020’s Desde el Mediterráneo.

This Christmas, hometown artists band together for “Formentera with Formentera”

cartell 2020 formentera amb formenteraThe Formentera Culture Department reports that at 6.00pm this Wednesday 9 December, the “Ajuntament Vell” exhibition space will pull back the curtain on Formentera amb Formentera (Formentera with Formentera).

With the world amid Covid-19 pitched into crisis, a group of illustrators, designers and musicians, all of them living on the island or nurturing close local ties, put their heads together and produced a shared creation: a thank-you video from the Formentera hospital to all the residents, businesses and government agencies that had offered pandemic-era help to the care facility.

The 30-piece exhibit includes work from Guillem Marí, Jan Ribas, Juan Moreno, Max Mallol, Patrícia Gea, Paula Tikas, Pilar Mena, Raquel Caramazana, Vicent Ferrer and Víctor Escandell, and can be seen at the Sala d’Exposicions “Ajuntament Vell” from Monday to Saturday, 11.00am–2.00pm and 6.00pm–8.00pm. The gallery is closed Sundays and Monday mornings.

Formentera stands up for rights of people with disabilities

foto 2020 DPDF 2One event in particular was at the heart of today’s celebration of International Day of People with Disabilities: ‘Cultivating values’ brought together members of Formentera associations at the adult day care centre, where volunteers planted eight trees and, alongside them, posted signs emblazoned with eight different rights —inclusive education; comprehensive care; healthcare; social protections; independent decision-making; participation in public affairs; personal independence and universal accessibility.

After the event, Yolanda Mota Rodríguez, whose daughter has Down syndrome, read a manifesto which included the following: “Today, a day dedicated to people with different abilities, we plant these trees for their rights. Our hope is that one day the struggle to achieve those rights will be in the past”. “We hope our trees grow roots as strong as the roots of families in need of orientation, support, help and resources... Education is inclusive when we all learn from each other. When watered with unconditional love, it bears the fruit of a rich society where respect for diversity is a reality.”

From 11.00am to 1.00pm in Sant Francesc’s Plaça de la Constitució, local functional diversity groups tended an information stand and sold products handcrafted by islanders at the adult day care centre.

Collaborators in activities include the Eivissa-Formentera Association of People with Special Needs (Apneef); Pau Mayans Association for the Integration of People on the Autism Spectrum (Apmitea); the local chapter of the Spanish Cancer Association (Formentera-AECC); the local support group for chemical sensitivity, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and other conditions; the Eivissa-Formentera Group for Advanced Capacities and Talents (ACTEF) and the Pine Islands Group for Social and Educational Inclusion (APIES).

Drafting the comprehensive plan for people with functional diversity
Social welfare councillor Rafael Ramírez underlined “the outstanding work that these associations and families put in to build visibility for individuals with disabilities” and said local government had “a key role to play in making sure we get there”. In that same regard, the councillor pointed to efforts already under way to prepare a comprehensive plan for people with functional diversity: “It will be a tool to achieve full respect of the rights that we’re talking about today”.

As part of an activties programme hosted in association with Formentera Film and Soria International Short Film Fest, at 7.00pm on 11, 18, 22 and 29 December, islanders can catch an array of short-films about diversity and inclusion. The first screening will take place at Casa del Poble de la Mola, the following three at the Sala d’Actes of the Consell. Space is limited and reservations are required: administració.centredia@conselldeformentera.cat.

And, all December long, island crowds can see Alexis and Bruno Morante’s Bla, Bla, Bla before Friday and Sunday night films at the Formentera cinema (Sala de Cultura).

‘Protect Formentera, for you and for everyone!’ dresses for winter

cartell 2020 protegeix formenteraThe president’s office of the Consell de Formentera reports that a wintertime makeover has been given to the summer push reminding islanders and tourists of safety measures to stem the spread of Covid-19 and protect each other.

Currently appearing across social media, the updated “Protect Formentera, for you and for everyone!” finds the campaign’s protagonists dawning winter attire as they act out central tenets of coronavirus prevention like mandatory masks, social distancing and frequent hand washing.

President Ferrer pointed to the long weekend 3-6 December and Christmas holidays on the horizon as she pleaded with the island’s residents and visitors to keep their guards up, insisting “if we forget the rules of Covid-19 safety, today’s very reassuring outlook could get bad quickly and put the whole island at risk”.

Free PCR testing
With the long weekend set to start tomorrow and celebrations planned in Sant Francesc, Ferrer asked arriving visitors to “make the visit safe” by submitting to a free PCR screening. Interested parties should call the Govern balear’s Infocovid service at 900.100.971 to schedule an appointment.
