Consell offers on-the-job training course for island’s aspiring youth leisure supervisors

The Formentera Department of Entrepreneurism reports that open enrolment has begun for an on-the-job training course designed to give local 16- to 29-year-olds the foundations to work as leisure supervisors.

Participants, referred to as “students/employees” and entering into training and apprenticeship contracts, will work as recreation supervisors at the Consell de Formentera’s assorted leisure centres. The six-month programme is scheduled to start in November.

The course is funded by the training and employment arm of the Balearic Islands Employment Service (SOIB) as part of a programme designed to enhance the dynamism of youth and adolescent recreational programmes. The cross-cutting brand of instruction employed in the course means participants will also receive English-language accreditation at the A2 level.

Interested parties must enrol by 25 October on the Mixed Training and Employment Programmes section of the SOIB website.

Discussion-debate: ‘Leveraging public policy to depathologise trans* identities’

cartell 2020 dia transThe Formentera Department of Equality and LGTBI Affairs reports that this Thursday 22 October, the Consell de Formentera invites islanders to a 7.00pm discussion-debate hosted by Lena Castells on the role of public policy in depathologising trans* identities. Castells heads the branch of the Balearic Islands’ Office of Rights and Diversity that is responsible for coordination and support around sexual and gender diversity.

The gathering will take place in the Consell conference hall (sala d’Actes) and is open to all, although space will be limited. A live-casting of the event is also in the works so that politicians and representatives of LGTBIQ+ groups across the Balearics can tune in as well. “Indeed, they’ll have more to say on the subject than anyone”, predicted Formentera equality and LGTBI chief Vanessa Parellada.

The consellera said it would be the first time Formentera became the stage of a debate involving political leaders and LGTBI associations from across the islands. “Government is always one step behind community groups and civil society”, admitted Parellada, who underscored the importance of “spaces like this one so we can find out first hand what’s expected of us, what needs are out there. It’s good because it pushes us and helps us shape strategy collectively so we can move closer to equal rights for everyone, regardless of gender identity.”

Consell offers courses and workshops for adults

cartell 2020 cursos 2The Department of Culture and Education and Department of Commerce of the Consell de Formentera present the autumn and winter catalogue of adult courses and workshops. The covid-19 crisis, new sanitary and safety protocol and capacity restrictions mean a number of offerings —Teresa Matilla’s craft and painting clinic, Aaron Keydar’s woodcutting course and Silvia Jobani’s pottery workshop— will only be able to accommodate previously enrolled students.

Enrolment is still open for the beginners’ course on digital photography by Jose Antonio Arribas. Eight hours of instruction will be spread across two units, 23–28 November and 14–19 December. Classes will blend theory with hands-on learning so students can learn a range of photo techniques inside the classroom and out. This course is for anyone who wants to get the most out of their camera or to dive deep into an array of photographic disciplines. Tuition is €60, with a 30% reduction available for students under 30 and retirees.

Winter hours in effect at La Mola lighthouse

foto 2020 far de la molaThe Formentera Department of Culture reports that low-season hours will henceforth be observed at El Far de la Mola. The lighthouse will be open for visits 10.00am to 2.00pm, Tuesday to Saturday, with weekly closures Sundays and Mondays.

A monument to civil engineering, La Mola’s lighthouse was designed by Emili Pou Bonet and completed in 1861. Today the building houses a space which is devoted to culture and to showcasing the island’s maritime heritage. It is divided into two clearly distinct exhibition spaces. The permanent exhibition explores its main focus —the sea— from a variety of angles: the marine environment, natural resources management, navigation and light signals. A second space is dedicated to temporary art exhibits.

General admission is €4.50, though residents of the Balearic Islands, youth under 18 and unemployed individuals enter free (pensioners and students get in at a reduced rate of €2.50).
