Consell de Formentera holds moment of silence

foto 2020 minut silenci 2With the ten-day period of national mourning set to conclude tomorrow, a minute of silence was observed on the front steps of the Consell de Formentera’s casa consistorial to commemorate the lives claimed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Consell president Alejandra Ferrer was joined in the show of condolence by the rest of the local cabinet, opposition members and administration staff.

Underwater and coastal cleanup at Ses Illetes

cartell 2020 dia medi ambientThe Formentera Department of Environment has scheduled a cleanup of the Ses Illetes shoreline and seafloor in commemoration of World Environment Day tomorrow, Friday 5 June. The two-part effort will see volunteers teaming up with Plastic-Free Formentera to comb Ses Illetes beach and, from 4.00pm, divers from Formentera Divers and Vellmarí combing debris from the nearby seafloor.

As to the timing of the cleanup, environment chief Antonio J Sanz highlighted the current absence of mooring ships, and the recent revelation by diving enthusiasts concerning a build-up of debris in the area. Conseller Sanz hailed the collaboration of the diving centres and environmental group Plastic-Free Formentera.

In compliance with Covid-19 protocols on the beach and in the water, participants must sign up in advance. Islanders wishing to take part in the shoreline cleanup should send an email to plasticfreeformentera@gmail.com. Volunteers for the underwater effort are asked to contact info@formenteradivers.com formentera@vellmari.com. Space is limited.

Formentera signs pact to support training, market research and business communication

foto 2020 cambra comercConsell de Formentera president Alejandra Ferrer was joined today by Juan Manuel Costa Escanellas, the local representative of the Chamber of Commerce, in signing into effect an annual agreement to collaborate on support for continuing education, market research and business communication on the island. The first deputy president and business consellera Ana Juan was also on hand at the signing.

The Consell de Formentera pledges €7,000 to help organise wide-ranging programming like day-long training sessions; lifelong learning opportunities in fields such as languages, business, emerging technologies and entrepreneurship; business consulting; creating, managing and funding businesses and safety in the workplace.

Consell and Pimef renew joint effort to foment local small business

conveni pimefConsell de Formentera president Alejandra Ferrer sat down today with Josep Mayans, chief of Formentera’s small and medium-sized business league (Pimef), to sign into effect an agreement to invest in continuing education, market research and business communication on the island. The first deputy president and business consellera Ana Juan was also on hand at the signing.

In 2020 the Consell de Formentera pledges to direct €22,000 to Pimef so that, in coordination with the Formentera Department of Commerce, the two parties can host winter training programmes for business owners, pilot projects and marketing strategies, and offer tools to render local trade more dynamic and grow competitively. The deal also encompasses campaigns like Compra a Casa, business consulting, efforts to study cultural patronage and seek businesses’ buy-in on wide-ranging environmental projects.

Ajuntament Vell exhibition space reopens

foto 2020 mar ample2As the municipal exhibition space joins the list of newly reopened buildings today, Monday 1 June, it hails the arrival of L'ombra del temps, the latest offering from artist Mar Ample. The display comprises a series of oversize paper creations where the true stars of the show are the white of the paper and shadows that are traced by light.

Visiting hours are 11.00am to 2.00pm and 6.00pm to 8.00pm. The gallery is closed Sundays and Monday mornings, and the show ends Saturday 13 June.

Safety and hygiene protocol will be in effect at the Ajuntament Vell exhibition space and maximum capacity is set at five. Visits will be individual (not limited to individual persons, but individual groups of up to six). Larger group visits are not allowed. Visitors must wait and maintain physical distancing outside the gallery until notified it is time to enter. Visits will be conducted in one direction only, respecting the established entry and exit points.

Safety protocol at Casa del Poble and Ajuntament Vell
Masks must be worn whenever the safe two-metre distance between individuals cannot be respected. Hand sanitiser will be available.
