Windsurfing school opens 1 June

foto escola de velapjThe Formentera Department of Sport reports that the Escola de Vela will begin operations on 1 June. Two-hour courses will be held Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 11.30am, 12 noon to 2.00pm and 4.30pm to 6.30pm. Students can attend any day they choose, provided they arrive on time. Given new Covid-19 safety protocol, no more than two individuals will be permitted per course, and windsurfing is currently the only modality available.

Courses are open to children (eight and up) and adults who know how to swim. Students who wish to schedule a course should call at least 48 hours in advance, and signups can be completed at the Antoni Blanc fitness centre. Safety and hygiene protocol will be enforced and masks must be worn. Summer courses start the week of 22 June. Details about the start of signups and exact times to follow in the weeks ahead.

Consell de Formentera facilitates internet access for pupils with online coursework

The Consell de Formentera has handed out cards enabling a telephone-based internet connection to pupils who need the digital resource to continue their studies. Thirty-two families responded to a related offer by the local social welfare office to request the service. With Formentera’s Department of New Technologies overseeing logistics, the Vodafone telecom company donated 50 connection cards facilitating free internet access to school children. To request one of the remaining 18 cards still available, islanders are encouraged to send an email to benestarsocial@conselldeformentera.cat or telephone 971 32 12 71.

The Consell also helped deliver computers and other digital equipment to schools where pupils without a home internet connection were given the chance to request the material on loan. Meanwhile, the education office proposed guidance to families that opted for the service. The aim of the initiatives is to give pupils a way to follow classes online while the Covid-19 crisis prevents a return to the classroom. The Consell de Formentera wishes to applaud the work of the Civil Protection volunteers responsible for distribution.

Formentera’s escoletes to reopen between 8-15 June

The Formentera Department of Education reports that the nurseries Sa Miranda and Camí Vell will reopen between 8 and 15 June. The escoletes will open at 50% capacity, with space for 54 of the typical 108 children enrolled. Priority will go to children of parents for whom balancing work and childcare is problematic, households facing increased risk of social and economic hardship and families in which children are receiving special protective attention.

Phone calls will be going out in the days ahead to assess the situations of individual families and determine which children will be among those returning to class this spring. Families of children who stay home need not pay any fees, and spots will be guaranteed for the coming school year. According to education consellera Susana Labrador, in recent weeks the Consell de Formentera has been working with the Govern balear to ensure the return to classrooms is safe for children and educators alike, and that the latest ministerial orders allow for just that. Labrador additionally indicated that safety protocols at the nurseries were now being fine-tuned.

“Confinement was more difficult for children, and we know how hard it’s been on families trying to juggle a job and childcare”, said Labrador. “Being able to open this educational meeting place—so crucial to a return to normal for adults and kids alike—is among the administration’s top priorities.”

Classrooms will reopen in line with safety and hygiene protocol: educators will wear masks, for example—“we know the two-metre rule won’t be feasible with little ones”, explained the consellera. Children will take turns in the patio area, open-air activities will be encouraged and the adjusted instructor-pupil ratio will enable teachers to adapt educational activities to the Covid-19 situation.

Gearing up for 2020 season, Consell launches call for 22 summer school counsellors

The Consell de Formentera reports that this week, with efforts under way to launch the island’s 2020 summer school programme, a call is going out for 22 day-camp counsellors, with a Sunday 31 May deadline on applications. Work is tentatively expected to start 8 June and continue between two and a half and three months. Interested parties can sign up and get complete information about the offer on the human resources section of the Consell’s website or by clicking on the job offers link here.

Vanessa Parellada, chief of the island’s Department of Youth signalled 1 July as a likely date that children ages 3 to 12 could begin the summer school programme, telling parents to expect the usual dates to apply. “Emergency orders currently prevent leisure activities like those provided at a summer school”, said Parellada, “but we want to be ready so that the moment the restriction is loosened we can put forward an activities programme offering young people top-notch recreational options this summer. After these months of confinement, they surely need it more now than ever.”

The consellera described the summer school programme as a source of help for many parents who have been called on to return to work, and made assurances that the Escola d’Estiu would be reopened under lock-step compliance with hygiene and health protocol. For weeks the Formentera Department of Youth, or Àrea de Joventut, has been working with the Balearic government and other regional island councils to draft a health protocol and safety measures that must be tuned to orders from the Spanish health ministry. In the days ahead families can begin the process of enrolment and will receive details about the activities and safety measures observed as part of the Escola d’Estiu.
