From 3–26 March, Formentera stages 14th round of classes to help foreigners finesse cultural and social integration

curs-2019-integracio--jpFrom 19-28 February, enrolment will be open for the Formentera Department of Social Welfare’s course on social and cultural integration. The course is held twice yearly at the island’s adult learning centre, and for this round, classes extend from 3-26 March. Students who complete the course successfully receive a report from the Balearic government accrediting the holder’s efforts towards integration, and classes serve to prepare individuals ahead of the CCSE citizenship test.

Space is available for 15 and individuals interested in enrolling are asked to inquire at the social welfare office during regular office hours, 9.00am to 2.00pm. A valid ID (temporary residence card or passport) is required for registration. Conducted over 20 hours in two weekly sessions, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4.30 to 7.00pm, the course will be held in the large classroom of the Escola d’Adults.

Topics covered will include Spain's constitutional values, human rights and civil liberties, the Balearic Statute of Autonomy, the European Union and gender equality, among others.

Next Saturday, Toni Gomila and Oriol Broggi join forces and breathe life into “Rostoll Cremat”

foto-rostoll-cremat-j1The Formentera Department of Culture reports that Saturday 15 February from 8.30pm in the Sala de Cultura (Cinema), local audiences will get their chance to see Rostoll Cremat. The stage performance sees two of the Balearic and Catalan theatre scenes’ shining stars —Toni Gomila and Oriol Broggi— as they team up to breathe life into Rostoll Cremat, an allegory of human ambition and greed refracted in Mallorca today.

Directed by Broggi, the work is based on a text by Gomila, who also acts. The production reflects on contemporary society across popular and universal works of literature —local fairytale figurehead Joanet de sa gerra and George Sand provide the narrative through-lines, which also contain glimpses of Shakespeare, Chekov and Ibsen— and paints a picture of tourism in the region and the upheaval that islanders themselves are going through, underscoring the contradictory ambition lying beneath it all.

Gomila made early inroads into the world of theatre with works like Acorar, Infinir and Peccatum, though Rostoll Cremat is his first outsize production as a playwright, and we see him here in his element: not only as an actor, but also in his use of Catalan. Department head Susana Labrador encouraged islanders to “save Saturday for theatre, and prepare to reflect on the transformation of the Balearic Islands, and islanders, under tourism”.

Rostoll Cremat is a co-production of the Barcelona theatre festival Grec 2019, Palma’s Teatre Principal and Produccions de Ferro. The 110’-show starts Saturday 15 February at 8.30pm in the Sala de Cultura (Cinema). Admission is €7 for adults and €5 for viewers under 18.

On 29 March, 18th Festa Intercultural takes over Plaça Europa in Es Pujols

foto-festa-intercultural1Formentera’s social welfare department announces efforts are already under way to prepare for the 18th birthday bash of the Festa Intercultural — an event that will descend upon Es Pujols’ Plaça Europa on Sunday 29 March.

Department chief Rafael Ramírez described the ode to cultural exchange as “a deeply-rooted feature of the local landscape”, and one that has reflected, from the very start, “the multicultural reality of Formentera today”. Councillor Ramírez encouraged islanders to “come have a ball and relish the richness of this cultural marketplace”, pointing out that in years past as many as twenty countries and regions have been represented at the shindig.

12 February organising session with volunteers

The Department of Social Welfare reports that a planning meeting will take place in the Casal d’Entitats at 8.00pm on 12 February. The powwow is open to the general public and the Consell encourages anyone who might be interested to attend. For more details, interested parties can phone 971 321 271 or send an email to intercultural@conselldeformentera.cat.

The encounter brings together hundreds of Formentera residents representing a range of nationalities and regional identities. The all-ages day-long event comes with activities tuned specially for children, samples of signature food and drink from the distinct regions, musical performances and demos of homegrown dance. Delegates from roughly fifteen countries and regions have already confirmed they will participate, and sign ups are still open. Participants have previously included Cuba, Chile, Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Argentina, Colombia, Indonesia, Brazil, Italy, Ecuador, Morocco, Germany, Paraguay, Andalucia, Galicia, Extremadura, València and Catalunya.

Formentera takes show to Milan’s International Travel Expo

foto-2020-cami-roma--1Sunday 9 February marks the start of Milan’s International Travel Expo (Borsa Internazionale del Turismo, BIT), a three-day affair that runs until Tuesday 11 February. Responding to calls from Formentera businesses whose stock in trade is tourism, the island’s commander-in-chief Alejandra Ferrer and head of the tourism authority Carlos Bernús will be on hand promoting Formentera as an island where sustainability reigns.

From the comfort of Formentera’s very own stand, the island’s representatives will distribute promotional material underlining the perks of visiting away from the traditional summer season. “One reason people come is the sport- and culture-focused programming in the pre- and post-season”, Ferrer said. The pair will also push “Slow Food Formentera”, a map of local growers and businesses trading in locally-sourced products that the island’s handlers have teed up for the season ahead.

Tour operators and niche and local media outlets will sit for a close-up of the island on Monday at 8.30pm. Italian travellers constitute one of Formentera’s largest markets.

Road to sustainability—island prepares to reactivate formentera.eco to limit in-bound vehicles in July and August

foto-segona-sessio---consell-e3The Consell d’Entitats reconvened today, Thursday 6 February, in the second of two sessions devised to appraise member groups of plans for formentera.eco in 2020. After an initial gathering last week where the proposal was unveiled, today’s session saw groups get answers to some of their questions surrounding the measure and a vote on exactly when “regulated vehicle entry” will be enforced in 2020.

Citizen participation councillor Vanessa Parellada oversaw the event, which administration chief Alejandra Ferrer kicked off with a look back at the “three-pronged sustainable tourism strategy” used by Formentera to court visitors in recent years. “We’re talking about making the island economically, ecologically and socially sustainable”, said Ferrer, “it’s a brand of sustainability that’s grounded in quality of life—and not just for residents, but also with regard to the experience of our visitors”. “Since the very start, formentera.eco has been about keeping Formentera special; maintaining what sets us apart from other destinations; preserving our sense of tranquility; making sure that people can continue to enjoy the island today and for generations to come”.

For his part, mobility councillor Rafael González indicated that the ceiling on vehicles will likely be lowered by 4% in 2020. Last year the official limit was 22,382, however, only 21,929 motorists were given authorisation to drive cars on the island. The official limit this year will be 21,487. The question of when regulation would be enforced was also put to attendees of the meeting. After comments were heard, participants put the issue to a vote, agreeing to reinstate enforcement from 1 July to 31 August 2020, namely, peak tourist season.

Visitors must pay €1/day for cars and 50 cents for motor-scooters (minimums—€5 for the former and €2.50 for the latter—are also established). Permission to bring a vehicle and operate it on the island can be requested in advance. Such “pre-reservations” (prereserves) can be made from March on the formentera.eco website and formalised starting in April. Authorisation is guaranteed for people who have already reserved overnight lodging or ferry tickets for vehicle passage. A specific portal will be made available for related inquiries on formentera.eco.

Highlighting “a clear path forward this legislative term for an orderly and gradual reduction of highway saturation”, Councillor González indicated that the upper limit on permitted vehicles was expected to fall by four per cent every year—or 16% in four years. Discussion also centred on upgrades ahead to public transport—part of making sure that, for islanders and tourists alike, mobility becomes increasingly sustainable.
