Open enrolment for kids’ vegetable patch workshop

foto-hort-infantil1The Consell de Formentera primary sector department reports that beginning Monday 14 October, islanders can register their young ones to participate in the children’s vegetable patch course. The classes are geared toward ages 4 to 12 and will be held Saturday mornings, from 26 October to 20 June. Signups will happen at the Citizen’s Information Office (OAC) and the office’s virtual platform (OVAC).

As primary sector councillor Josep Marí pointed out, the course, led by specialist Lorna Hernández, has two objectives at its core: “to foment earth-smart and traditional methods of working the land, and develop respect for classmates and the natural world”.

Workshops will play out at the children's vegetable patch, or Hort Infantil, located near Sa Tanca Vella chapel in Sant Francesc. Two groups will be formed: one for kids aged 4 to 7 that meets Saturdays from 10.00am to 11.45am, and another for children aged 8 to 12 from 12.15pm to 2.00pm. The classes are free.

Discussing plans for Balearic Islands Day celebrations

foto-reunio---preparacio---dia1Councillor of Culture Susana Labrador met today with the director general of inter-administration relations, Miquel Àngel Coll, to begin coordinating work on the events programme for the Balearic Islands Day (Dia de les Illes Balears) on 1 March. Part of an effort to make festivities reflective of diverse interests across the archipelago, recent years have seen the regional government encouraging island councils to take an active role in planning.

The Consell de Formentera and Govern balear will strike a collaborative agreement about programming that promotes a regional identity while still honouring the distinctive qualities of each island. Councillor Labrador welcomed the visit from Director General Coll and pledged that Formentera’s local government would “cooperate to ensure that this year’s programme is a complete one, and that there’s something for Formentera residents”.

Staff from the local and regional administrations were also in attendance at the gathering.

She encouraged everyone to “put it all on the table in terms of the challenges to the environment and sustainability that we’ll be facing in the coming years”.

foto joan mari cardona2019 1From the conference room of the Centre de Dia, the Department of Patrimony-piloted Joan Marí Cardona Local Study Days (Jornades d’Estudis Locals) playing out this week are now officially in the home stretch. Before the final conference of the lecture series’ eleventh year tomorrow, the penultimate talk takes place tonight at 8.15pm, with Felip Cirer Costa. On Friday at 8.15pm, doctor in human biology Maria Eulalia Subirà de Galdàcano will speak about Sa Tanca Vella burial ground in a lecture focussed particularly on what the site can tell us about the people inhabiting Formentera in fourth and fifth century C.E.

The lectures series is causing quite a stir among certain islanders, and given its inclusion among the professional development course offering available to educational staff, the Balearic ministry of education has indicated it will recognise credits obtained by attendees.

At Madrid Trafic expo, Formentera shares ‘regulated entry’ approach to tackling vehicle saturation

foto-presentacio---formentera-1Mobility chief Rafael González stood before crowds at the Trafic expo today in Madrid to talk about formentera.eco, the island’s system to restrict the flow of incoming vehicles. Attendees of the fair, which runs 8 to 11 October, will learn about safe and sustainable mobility.

Councillor González gave an overview of the mobility projects launched on the island in recent years, from nature trails, pedestrian zones and metred parking in the island’s main urban centres, to sustainable vehicle promotion, tightened regulations on vehicle access to places like Ses Salines nature reserve and Es Cap de Barbaria lighthouse, adoption of the first “Sustainable Mobility Plan” and rollout of formentera.eco.

On that last note, González described the system as without precedent anywhere in Spain, and highlighted, apart from the growing popularity of sustainable mobility options like public transport and cycling, success in one priority area in particular: “breaking the trend of ever more saturated roads during the high season”.

Looking ahead
González described public transport improvements and expansion of the nature trail network as areas of acute importance moving forward, not to mention engaging with local non-profits, NGOs and businesses in the creation of a roadmap for regulation next summer. “It will reflect the fact that sustainable mobility is synonymous with sustainable tourism”, said the councillor. “This, together with other conservation measures, is what we’re relying on so that Formentera is still around for future generations to enjoy.”
