Formentera pupils get smart about plastics problem

foto-plastic-zero-1The Formentera Council's departments of environment and education have teamed up on Plàstic 0, an initiative launched by Observadores del Mar, a “science platform for the people” overseen by the ecological group Gen-Gob in Eivissa and Formentera.

Problematic plastic
Plastics have become one of the most widespread human-made materials today. It is relatively cheap to produce and extremely resistant, which explains its abundance in oceans and seas and across the coastlines of the world. Plastics make up 97% of the materials found in these places, and that's touching off a gathering environmental crisis in practically all underwater ecosystems.

Plastics break down into smaller and smaller particles known as “microplastics” (a distinction reserved for particles no greater than 5 mm large) and typically enter the lower rungs of the food chain when certain marine organisms mistake them for food.

Plàstic 0
Plàstic 0 is about getting the engagement and commitment of a wide base of people, from early childhood, to deliver real answers and solutions to complex issues like the microplastics littering our shoreline.

Since 2017 Gen-Gob, together with a number of schools, has been responsible for collecting samples at Eivissa beaches. This year Formentera's three primary schools have joined in too, adopting local beaches Cavall d'en Borràs, Migjorn and Es Pujols.

In the words of environment secretary Daisee Aguilera, “it's crucial that we reach our children about the importance of caring for the environment. The data we'll obtain are vital because it will be part of a nationwide effort. Our children, meanwhile, will be acting as scientists in training and learning the significance of taking care of our surrounding ecosystems”.

Cavall d'en Borràs beach, chosen by the pupils of Mestre Lluís Andreu school, will see action this Friday. Operations will be overseen by Agnès Vidal, head of Gen-Gob Eivissa's environmental outreach division, who explained: “The children will be in charge of this beach during the entire term. A new group will come each month and collect samples to be analysed for microplastics”.

The samples will be placed into categories and shipped to Blanes, where final results will be compiled and a plan of action to tackle the problem will be developed.

Saturday in Es Pujols, Formentera's sixth triathlon

foto-triatlo-3Secretary of sport Jordi Vidal unveiled details today of Formentera's sixth triathlon, scheduled to play out in Es Pujols this Saturday, October 6. He was joined by Manuel Hernández, head of event organisers Unisport Consulting, and Rafael Cardona, a spokesperson for sponsoring company Trasmapi.

Organisers are expecting some 250 triathletes at the trial, half of them competing in the “sprint” category and the other half in “olympic”. Sprinters and teams start at 2.15pm with a 750-m swim in Es Pujols bay before moving on to 20km of cycling and 5km on foot. Olympic athletes set out at 4.00pm, swimming 1,500m, then cycling 40km, then running 10km.

Any aspiring contenders who have not yet signed up can do so tomorrow between 9.30am and 12 noon in Es Pujols' plaça d'Europa. Numbers will also be available for pickup there between 9.30am and 1.30pm.

Road closures

Tomorrow from 2.00pm till 6.45pm, the road linking Es Pujols and La Savina will be closed to vehicle traffic from Es Pujols to Illetes. In Es Pujols, all but the town's ring road will remain closed to traffic from 2.00pm to 7.20pm. Motorists must take alternate routes during that time, and secretary Vidal apologised to islanders for the inconvenience.

Vidal welcomed Trasmapi's support in organising the event for the sixth straight year. The competition is part of Discover Formentera in October, an initiative aimed at getting travellers to visit the island outside the high season. Vidal also highlighted the participation and collaboration of Viatges Es Freus, Carbónicas Tur, Frufor, Pro-Auto, Actuacions La Mola, Formotor, Motor Pujols, S'Avaradero, Trasmediterranea and Blue Bar.

The secretary also praised the island's local police, Guardia Civil, civil protection and volunteer forces for making the triathlon possible year after year.

Formentera offers extra language help for schools' newest arrivals

foto acolliment ling 2018The Formentera Council's social welfare department reports that students can begin enrolment tomorrow, Friday October 5, for the latest round of “language integration” classes. Department head Vanessa Parellada and instructor/coordinator Maria Isabel Jiménez met today to unveil the project, aimed as a leg-up for recently arrived learners on the island.

Extra help for language learners
Given heightened rates of school failure and early school leaving among young immigrants, a potential hindrance to development in both the financial and social spheres, the immigration arm of the Council fashioned the present initiative as a way to offer support for some of the needs specific to that community.

Aims of assistance
Beginning October 15 and running through the school year, this year's programme purports to offer extra help to Formentera's newest arrivals at the primary and secondary level.

According to instructor/coordinator Maria Isabel Jiménez, “the classes are a resource for anyone who might benefit from improved reading, writing and oral comprehension in Catalan” and anyone in need of assistance meeting the levels required at schools.

The courses are seen as a way not only to improve classroom learning, but also to advance participants' social integration, for, in the words of Parellada, “proper integration in the schoolyard tends to mean good things for the entire family's success integrating”.

Adapted to the academic level of each student, instruction is meant to promote teamwork; level the playing field between students and foment positive attitudes among new students regarding Catalan, the working language at schools in the Balearics.

Signups
Enrolment for the courses will be handled at the social welfare department (conselleria de Benestar Social, vénda des Brolls, 53), Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 2.00pm. Enrolment opens this Friday October 5 and extends to Friday October 12.

More information is available by phoning 971 32 12 71 or emailing rescolar@conselldeformentera.cat

The location of classes will depend on the need and number of students registered.

Ambulantes Teatro y Danza present 'Por unos pasitos de ná' to Formentera audiences

foto-por-unos-pasitos-de-na 1The Formentera Council's department of culture welcomes Por unos pasitos de ná, a dance production for children three and up scoring big-time plaudits from critics and audiences in towns and cities across the country.

A blend of flamenco and contemporary dance, Por unos pasitos de ná plays out as an encounter of three dancers/geometric figures. Two are circular, one is square, all three have got a different shape and dance.

Heeding a celebratory call, the dancers make their way towards a door that the circular ones slip through without a hitch. The problem comes when the square dancer attempts to follow suit; the round door leaves her at a loss. Her fellow dancers encourage her to change her identity, her shape, her dance; but, true to her proud flamenco roots, she is adamant about maintaining her identity and shape. The solution, of course, comes with fun-loving and clown-like dance.

Ambulantes Teatro y Danza weave a fun-filled spectacle in the key of clown, and highlight the importance of identity while promoting respect for people who are different.

The production comes to Formentera as part of PLATEA. Launched in 2014, PLATEA is an initiative of Spain's national institute of performing arts and music, an offshoot of the Spanish ministry of education, culture and sport, and aims to bring top-notch nationwide productions to Formentera theatre-lovers.

The troupe
Ambulantes Teatro y Danza's experience in children's productions spans many years. Their start came adapting youth-friendly texts for the stage, in pieces seasoned with the language of dance. The troupe was trained at Albacete's municipal theatre school and Madrid's Sala Cuarta Pared. Past productions include a child-friendly version of Don Quijote, Pulgarcito (or “Tom Thumb” to English-speaking audiences) and Déjate llevar.

In addition to Saturday's production, Ambulantes Teatro y Danza will offer three workshops to students of Formentera's school of music and dance on Friday evening.

Por unos pasitos de ná makes its début before Formentera audiences this Saturday, October 6 at 6.00pm at the cinema (Sala de Cultura). Tickets for the 50-minute production can be purchased at the box office the day of the function for €3.
