Formentera honours its athletes

foto 2022xi gala esport CAt the Formentera Sports Gala held today in the Sala de Cultura-Cinema, Formentera paid tribute to athletes, clubs, volunteers, sponsors and people who excelled in local sport in 2020 and 2021. Andrea Romero and Mateo Sanz were proclaimed the best male and female athletes of the last two years. The gala, which was presented by sports journalist Maria Mayans, featured demonstrations in karate, taekwondo and figure skating and was broadcast on the YouTube channels of the Consell de Formentera and IB3.

Additional accolades went to Club Bàsket Formentera, which was named best club, Cosmitos Deportivo and SD Formentera, best teams, and Helena Lafuente and Mateo Jiménez, most promising athletes. In addition, Alex Figueiras was celebrated for exemplary coaching; Agustí Moyà for most sportsmanlike values, and Maria del Carmen Costa for pre-eminent efforts to promote sport, with Trasmapi named the best sponsoring company.

Gala attendees additionally applauded outstanding athletes in every specialty where a candidate sought consideration. Awardees included Luka Romero (football), Roger Márquez (tennis), Alex Buchau (windsurfing), Andrea Romero (athletics), Pamela Torres (judo), Darío Ibañez (cycling), Martí Juan (triathlon), Carla Santamaría (archery), Paula Escandell (taekwondo) and Verónica Luceno (indoor football).

Ana Juan, president of the Consell de Formentera, closed the ceremony. She applauded award recipients and framed the gala as, above all, acknowledgment for all those who make sport possible on the island. "Sport enriches us as a society. This is why we must never lose sight of its value as a social transformer and tool to boost participation, social integration and equality... Sport helps us eliminate barriers and overcome prejudices that, sadly, many still hold. The Consell de Formentera will continue fomenting sport and accentuating sportsmanlike values from the bottom up and in everything we promote".

For her part, Paula Ferrer, councillor of sport, praised the efforts of "the entire family that is Formentera sport, particularly during the challenging times of the pandemic". She also offered special kudos "to collaborating volunteers, without whom these events would be impossible".

After the ceremony, pupils of IES Marc Ferrer's cooking and services module served light food and drinks to award winners and the audience.

Formentera takes formentera.eco to expo for innovation, technology and sustainability in tourism

foto 2022xi sevilla AToday the Consell de Formentera will conclude a three-day stint at the Tourism Innovation Summit, which began in Seville 2 November. This trade show promotes innovation, technology and sustainability in the tourism sector. Rafael González, councillor of mobility, took part in a talk titled "Sustainability, an obligation" where he presented the project formentera.eco.

After the presentation at a round table moderated by PR agent Tommy Ferragut, Councillor González shared the stage with the tourism councillor for the City of Palma and the general manager of Garden Hotel, Jordi de las Moras, who also shined a light on their own visions of sustainability.

González unpacked the project to regulate vehicles brought and driven on the island, which turned four this summer, noting, "We have already begun to see the expected results". "Traffic has dropped 8.5% since 2017 and sustainable mobility is on the rise", he said, "cycling is up 150% and taxi and bus ridership have climbed 70% and 2%, respectively, marking a return to pre-pandemic figures".

This is the second year that Formentera has been invited to the expo to highlight its example as a sustainable island. Last year we talked about the Save Posidonia Project and other initiatives.

Formentera welcomes "El Plan"

The Formentera Office of Culture is pleased to report that Saturday 12 November at 8.30pm, the Sala de Cultura (Cinema) will host the 18-and-older production El Plan.

Winner of the 2015 Godoff Award for best play on the circuit, El Plan is a black comedy in which the protagonists gradually strip themselves of social masks and push their survival instincts and notions of friendship to the limit.

It is the story of three friends, three colleagues in misery, three ordinary people who do not seem like fictional characters. "You see people like Ramón, Ximo and Andrade every day in the bar near your home, in the elevator or on the bus; they are people no one would notice", affirm members of the theatre troupe. This feature serves a dual function: laughter and identification are sincere and immediate, but the outcome is also more shocking and painful. El Plan surprises, not only with the story it tells, but with the honest and direct way Ignacio Vidal tells it. "We find humour in the internal drama of the three acidic and corrosive characters, and the most surprising thing about the show is its formal perfection, where it seems that nothing important happens, but everything advances inexorably until the end... And, when we are perplexed and overwhelmed by this ending, we realise that nothing of what we have been told has been casual", explains the director. El Plan is, above all, a profound reflection on friendship.

Formentera participates in WTM to reinforce pre- and post-season with British tourism

The Formentera Office of Tourism is pleased to report that the island will be present at London's World Travel Market (WTM) between 7 and 9 November. On hand to promote Formentera at the UK's biggest travel expo will be Ana Juan, Alejandra Ferrer and Carlos Bernús (president, vice president/tourism councillor and tourism marketing chief of the Consell de Formentera, respectively).

President Juan said that visitors to Formentera's section of the Balearic Islands stand "can learn about the local offer and, in particular, off-season draws like cultural, sports and leisure events".

At 10.30am on day two of the expo, Tuesday 8 November, "Balearic Islands, the tourism of the future" will offer a look at the region's characteristics as a destination. The presentation will be followed by a round-table discussion with the participation of all the islands.

There, Vice President Ferrer will tout Formentera's sustainable side and highlight projects like formentera.eco to regulate incoming vehicles and Save Posidonia Project to protect posidonia. She will also explain "other steps to ensure that each visit to Formentera remains a unique experience and that our visitors are aware of the place they are visiting, where resources are limited and must be used with care".

Formentera's representatives at the WTM will also make contact with tour operators and travel agents who have already programmed their 2023 seasons. Visitors to this year's stand will find a poster reading "Under the Formentera blue lies the posidonia green", where, by scanning a QR code, they can download literature about the island digitally to save paper.

These catalogues spotlight Formentera's offer in sport, culture, heritage and cuisine, as well as nature activities, ornithological routes and ways to discover our past and most deeply rooted traditions.

Newly formed waste commission to set projects to get funding under rubbish tax

foto 2022xi comissio residus AAna Juan, Bartomeu Escandell and Antoni Tur (respectively, the president, finance councillor and environment councillor of the Consell de Formentera), together with Miquel Mir and Sebastià Sansó, minister of environment and director general of waste and environmental education for the Balearic government, took part in the formation of Formentera's Island Waste Commission (Comissió insular de residus, CIR).

At the meeting, attendees set terms for the distribution of the Waste Prevention and Management Fund for fiscal years 2022 and 2023. These resources draw on funding from Formentera's waste tax, or cànon de residus, and are estimated to be as high as €119,808.71. The money must be used to advance prevention, preparation for reuse and recycling (particularly organic refuse) and educational campaigns.

President Ana Juan explained that "this tax will return to Formentera as investments". Attendees of the gathering said they would continue working together to determine where the tax money will go, and described projects as including improvements to waste management and recycling systems and more.

Mir voiced his satisfaction about the region-wide launch of the waste commissions, which he called "a localised tool to ensure each island benefits from investments to cut waste and manage it better to achieve the objectives in the Refuse Act (Llei de residus)".

Funding levels will depend on the implementation of rubbish and recycling pick-up schemes in each municipality, with plans for this funding to gradually shrink as pay-as-you-throw and organic waste sorting become fully incorporated. The aim is fulfilment of the objectives of regional legislation on waste and contaminated soils (Law 8/2019) as well as regulations at state and European level. Once these objectives are achieved, the tax will be marginal.
