Sant Ferran school canteen serves its first meals

foto 2022x menjador escolar CToday Ana Juan, Alejandra Ferrer and Susana Labrador, the respective president, vice president and councillor of education for the Consell de Formentera, together with Margalida Ferrer, educational delegate for Eivissa and Formentera, paid a visit to the newly operational kitchen and canteen of the Sant Ferran de ses Roques primary school.

President Juan expressed her satisfaction at "launching a service that was at the heart of so many requests from the local educational community and one which will help islanders balance their professional and personal lives". She pointed up the Sant Ferran school's "tailor-made facilities" and said pooling the resources needed to underwrite the meal service had been "a collaborative effort".

For her part, Councillor Labrador said that when the previous concessionaire withdrew from the service, the joint decision by local government, the school and parents' association to take up the mantle meant "a great deal of work", and she applauded the Consell's partners in the endeavour. "We are the first island council to sign an agreement with the Balearic Government to run the meal service", she explained, adding that work was already under way so that in the coming months meals could also be offered in other public schools on the island.

Agreement
The Consell de Formentera struck a deal with the Balearic Ministry of Education and Vocational Training to take over management of the CEIP Sant Ferran school canteen service as a centralised kitchen from the 2022-2023 school year. The island's government runs the kitchen and cleans the spaces with its own staff.

Meal costs are set by the Sant Ferran school council. This year students who use the service every day will pay €6.50 and those who use it sporadically €7.15. The school parents' association will oversee payment collections.

Canteen monitors will be teachers from the school and will paid by the Balearic Government per ministry guidelines approved by yearly resolution. There may also be volunteer monitors from the parents' association.

Meal service for other public schools
Mestre Lluís Andreu and CEIP el Pilar de la Mola are taking administrative steps to apply for the canteen service through the Balearic Ministry of Education. Schools will have to provide a canteen space. Under the agreement, meals will prepared at the central kitchen at the Sant Ferran school and delivered elsewhere.

Children at the Sant Ferran nursery (escoleta) will also have their meals in the new canteen. "Until now they received meals from the kitchen at Escoleta La Miranda", said Labrador, "but now that the dining hall is operative, they will eat there a different time than primary pupils".

Neus Costa, director of CEIP Sant Ferran de ses Roques; representatives of the parents' association; Esperanza Suñer, director of Escoleta Sant Ferran; Neus Marí, director of CEIP Pilar de la Mola, and Santiago Ramírez, director of CEIP Mestre Lluís Andreu, also attended the event.

In 2023 regional funding to Formentera reaches €11.4m–up €2.5m from 2022

foto 2022x financamentToday Ana Juan and Bartomeu Escandell, president and finance councillor of the Consell de Formentera, respectively, together with Iago Negueruela, regional minister of economic model, tourism and labour, unveiled the Balearic government's planned funding for Formentera in 2023. At €11.4 million, the figure exceeds this year's package by €2.5 million.

As highlighted by Minister Negueruela, with the draft budgets for 2023, the Balearic government plans to provide the island councils with "the most funding to date, for an overall year-on-year uptick of 28.8%". If approved, the combined increase of nearly €124 million will set a new funding record of €553 million.

The president of the Consell described the funding bump as "good news for Formentera because it enables us to advance in self-government and direct management so we can continue developing actions and projects to improve the island's social equilibrium". Juan insisted that with social policies, "understanding and coordination between the local and regional administrations is crucial".

Councillor Escandell also applauded the funding boost, and voiced hopes that it would be "structural and not temporary, enabling us to continue making Formentera a better island for residents and visitors".

Formentera's funding from the Govern balear has gone from €4.6 million in 2014 to €11.4 million in 2023.

Elsewhere in the islands, the Consell de Mallorca will receive €392.4 million–an increase of €87.9 million compared to 2022. The Consell d'Eivissa will get €77.8 million (€17.2 million more than this year) and the Consell de Menorca €71.5 million (€7.5 million more). Overall, the current shape of regional funding in 2023 would mean an expansion of about 104% compared to 2015.

Today's data represent funding under Balearic legislation on financing for island councils (Law 3/2014) and are based on previsions of non-financial income and liquidated resources from 2021.

Start of grape harvest declaration period

The rural affairs division of the Consell de Formentera reminds islanders that local wine producers with vineyard rights have until 10 December to make their declaration concerning this year's grape harvest.

The declaration can be made between 9.00am and 2.00pm at the Formentera Office of Agriculture, Livestock, Fishing and Hunting (Conselleria d'Agricultura, Ramaderia, Pesca i Caça/CARPC; located in Centre Antoni Tur "Gabrielet"). From there, it will be sent to the Wine Registry of the Balearic Government.

Growers with less than 0.1 ha and those who make juice or consume grapes as fruit are exempt from making this declaration. Vineyard planting rights in Spain are regulated, and failure to declare harvests may result in a vineyard being declared abandoned.

Third APNEEF benefit concert

The Formentera Office of Culture is pleased to announce that the Association of People with Special Needs of Eivissa and Formentera (APNEEF), in collaboration with the Consell de Formentera, will host the return of an extra special evening of classical music to be held at the Sala de Cultura (Cinema) Saturday 15 October at 8.00 pm.

Performers include Alfredo Oyágüez, a pianist and artistic director of the Deià International Music Festival, and Byron Wallis, a violinist and native of the USA. Crowds at this year's event, the third APNEEF benefit concert, will witness the marriage of Oyágüez's gentle ivory-tickling and Wallis's delicate violin work as the pair perform works by F. Bruch, R. Schumannt and F. Schubert.

Since 1978 the Deià International Music Festival in Son Marroig (Mallorca) has been a showcase for chamber music. The prestigious event encompasses a wide range of concerts and numerous national and international performers, groups and composers. Shows take place in various venues between Deià and Valldemossa, like the former estate of Archduke Ludwig of Habsburg, Miramar monastery and Deià church.

Thanks to the commitment to social causes of organisers Alfredo Oyágüez and Rafael Cavestany, Formentera residents can look forward to a magical night close to home.

Admission
Tickets will be available for a €20 donation an hour before showtime at the door or through www.dimfentradas.com.

All proceeds will go to support APNEEF's projects and programmes to safeguard the rights of Pine Islands residents with functional diversity.
