Monday at 'Ajuntament Vell', Pamela Spitz unveils 'Retrats del 2000 al 2022'

The Formentera Office of Culture is pleased to report that from 11 to 22 October, the Sala d'Exposicions "Ajuntament Vell" will host "Retrats del 2000 al 2022" (Portraits from 2000 to 2022), an exhibition by photographer Pamela Spitz.

In roughly ninety photographs, the exhibition spotlights portraits of figures in the Spitz's orbit, including friends and members of the local community: some still here and some, witnesses of a bygone reality, who have moved on. In this way Spitz has built up an interesting catalogue of characters. The photos were shot with a Hasselblad, a medium-format analogue camera.  The prints, which Spitz made from the 6x6cm negatives of this camera, measure 40x50cm and 30x40cm.

Spitz, whose previous showings at the "Ajuntament Vell" space include the series "Dusty Wheels", returns this time with portraits. Some of the subjects are no longer with us, such as former school director Jaume Verdera; singer Pau Donés; artists Marcus Tessier, César Ordaz and Schoppi; and photographer Reinald Wünsche, among others.

Spitz spent much of the most important years of her youth on the island. And as she herself says, "for two years I have been back home, and I feel like just another islander. I have left the city to return to my roots, to be near the sea and my friends". Spitz continues to work as a photojournalist for the German newspapers Die Welt and Welt am Sonntag.

"Retrats del 2000 al 2022" opens Monday 10 October at 7.00pm. Visitors are welcome Monday to Saturday, 11.00am to 2.00pm and 6.00pm to 8.00pm.

The exhibition hall closes Monday mornings, Sundays and holidays.

Rat control in urban areas

foto 2022x desrati AToday the Formentera Office of Environment initiated efforts to control rat populations in towns on the island. Crews began work in Sant Francesc and Sant Ferran, and in the coming weeks will continue in the other towns.

Rodent control involves setting bait in the most representative locations and periodically checking them to assess their condition.

The Consell de Formentera has contracted a specialised company to carry out the operations. The approximate cost of the campaign, including an option for roach control in the summer, is €14,000 (VAT included).

Formentera attends second Turespaña Convention and plans summer 2023 promotion

foto 2022x convencio tourespanaToday the Formentera Office of Tourism is present at the second Turespaña Convention, on tourism governance, taking place at the Barcelona International Convention Centre between 3 and 5 October. The first two days of the fair included presentations and round tables on tourism news, best practices, sustainability and market intelligence. The Tourism Institute of Spain (Turespaña) also offered attendees a preview of the planning for the coming year.

Wednesday 5 October, heads of the Secretariat of State for Tourism (SETUR) and Turespaña, together with foreign tourism ministers, will hold technical meetings with representatives of tourist destinations. Formentera's head of tourism marketing, Carlos Bernús, will meet with 35 of these representatives to present the island as a destination and plan marketing activities for 2023.

Gatherings included foreign tourism ministers from Scandinavian countries, India, Singapore, Tokyo, Bombay and New York, as well as from Italy, France and Germany, among others. "With guidance from Turespaña agents, these meetings help us steer marketing efforts for next season, determine where we should strengthen our presence, and reduce costs by seeking out joint marketing efforts", Bernús explained.

Bernús also spoke to individuals in Turespaña's knowledge and research department about the work being done at Formentera's data observatory to improve coordination with state representatives and develop a strategic plan in accordance with the 2030 Agenda.

Formentera Sports Gala returns 5 November

The Formentera Office of Sports is pleased to announce that the Formentera Sports Gala will be held this year. The event, plans for which had been scuppered by the pandemic, returns Saturday 5 November at 6.00pm in the Sala de Cultura (Cinema).

Paula Ferrer, councillor of sports, described a revival of the tribute to the island's athletes, clubs, volunteers, sponsors and sports-lovers as "unfinished business". Ferrer insisted, "Besides recognising our athletes' achievements, this gala is about trumpeting sport as a nexus of union and social inclusion".

Honourees will include Best Model of Sportsmanlike Values, Most Promising Male and Female Athletes, Best Male and Female Athletes, Best Male and Female Teams and Best Coach, as well as best athlete in each local sport. Special mentions will also go the sponsoring entity that has most distinguished itself in promoting sport on the island, the most distinguished club or sporting association and the most prominent individual exponent of sport. Distinctions are based on the 2020/2021 season.

Formentera's sports clubs and associations proposed the nominations together with a panel comprising Councillor Ferrer, the municipal clerk, a Formentera Office of Sports manager, club representatives and a member of each political party with plenary representation on the Consell de Formentera.

Winners will receive a work of art by Silvia Jovani, a ceramics artist who worked for several years on the island and led the Consell's ceramics workshop.
