As Formentera tots return to nurseries, Consell waives tuition wholesale and annual fee for year-three students

foto 2022ix inici escoletes BThe Formentera Office of Education is pleased to announce that the 2022-2023 school year began today in local escoletes (nurseries). In total, 34 zero- to three-year-olds began classes at the Sant Ferran location and another 84 at Sa Miranda. The Consell is pleased to announce a waiting list of zero as the school year got under way. Twenty-three professionals work in the nurseries, among them educators, support personnel and administrative staff. Also noteworthy is the work of the kitchen and cleaning staff.

Free tuition
Susana Labrador, councillor of education and culture, pointed out that this year, as a special measure, the annual €70 tuition fee would be waived for all students. Schooling from 8.30am to 12.30pm will also be free for year-three students. Fees for the early-bird school, canteen and break time will remain in place.

As Councillor Labrador explained, "we are working to help all families by amending the ordinance to reduce part of the fee for 8.30am-to-12.30pm classroom learning and for years one and two of early-childhood education". Application of the measure is pending the modification of the associated ordinance. Discounts and exemptions provided for in the escoletes ordinance will be maintained and, as with large families, single-parent families will now benefit from a 30% reduction.

Councillor Labrador underscored "the tremendous budgetary effort that offering this service requires", and asserted, "We have been committed to it from the beginning. This is a priority for families". Likewise, Formentera will continue to request greater financial support from the Balearic and central governments so that free education is extended to all levels of the first period of infant education.

Hours and services
The escoletes are open from 7.30am to 4.00pm. This schedule includes early-bird service, normal classroom learning, canteen and break time.

Maintenance work
During the first half of September, upkeep and upgrades were performed by subcontractors and the Consell de Formentera works brigade, part of the Formentera Office of Island Services.

Escoleta Sa Miranda:
At Sa Miranda, crews replaced grass in the main courtyard, cleaned, removed mould, repaired and painted interiors, carpentry and doors, and more. They also put in a bicycle parking area and new shelving, and cleaned and performed repairs in outdoor areas.

Escoleta Sant Ferran:
Awnings were installed in the outdoor patios and water fountains were put into in the courtyards. The team of educators prepared classrooms and other areas of the school for arriving students "in one of life's most important educational stages, the cornerstone of their future," said Labrador, who praised "the great work done by escoleta teams" and wished both workers and students "a pleasant year".

Formentera celebrates Sustainable Mobility Week by promoting cycling

The Formentera Office of Mobility is pleased to announce that 2022 European Sustainable Mobility Week will run Friday 16 September to Thursday 22 September, with two local actions to promote sustainable mobility.

Conventional and electric bicycles
20 to 22 September, 10.00am to 1.00pm in Sant Francesc's Plaça de la Constitució, Formentera's two bicycle vendors will present an array of conventional and electric bicycles. Residents can try them and learn about special discounts currently available. There will also be bicycle accessories, such as helmets, lights, vests and more.

Free tune-ups for residents
20 to 22 September, local cyclists will also benefit from a free servicing and tune-up. Taller Es Brolls Formentera (Carretera de la Savina, km 2) will offer the service from 8.00am to 7.00pm, and Formentera Cycles (Carrer Guillem de Montgrí, 35, Sant Ferran) will offer it from 4.00pm to 8.00pm.

Residents with an ID card and certificate of residence (preferably on mobile phone/paperless) can visit the shops and an expert will offer a free tune-up. The offer includes basic servicing of the chain, wheels and brakes.

Rafael González hopes that these actions will get "more people on the island moving around on electric or conventional bicycles. These vehicles adapt very well to the characteristics of the island". Finally, the councillor pointed out that sustainable mobility also includes buses, which until 31 December are also free for residents.

Applications now accepted for 50 holiday rental permits

The Formentera Office of Tourism is pleased to report that today's edition of the Official Gazette of the Balearic Islands (Butlletí Oficial de les Illes Balears, BOIB) includes an agreement concerning the procedure, conditions and criteria governing distribution of 50 permits to begin or expand rental activity at lodgings used as holiday rentals. The proposal is exclusively for tourist-use holiday rentals. From today, interested parties have until 29 September 2022 to make their request. Application forms can be found in issue 121 of the BOIB, published 15 September.

Alejandra Ferrer, vice president and councillor of tourism, said that with the entry into force of Law 3/2022, legislation that included urgent measures for sustainability and circularity in the Balearic Islands, new permits for holiday rentals were temporarily suspended, with the exception of 50 permits on Formentera. "Negotiated during consultations, this exception offers a solution for families and small businesses that have already made investments and works. They will have preference especially if investments and works were done with sustainability and environmental criteria provided for in the Quality Plan approved by the Consell de Formentera, as well as those provided for in the tourism regulations", said Ferrer.

Applications can be processed in the "Tràmits i gestions" section of the Virtual Citizen Information Office (Oficina Virtual d'Atenció a la Ciutadania, OVAC) or in person at the Citizen Information Office (Oficina d'Atenció a la Ciutadania, OAC).

Two coastal cleanups at Ses Pesqueres Altes and Es Carnatge

The Formentera Office of Environment is pleased to report that over the next two Saturdays, 17 and 24 September, coastal cleanups will be held in Ses Pesqueres Altes (S'Estufador) and Es Carnatge, respectively. The first is organised by Plastic Free Formentera on the occasion of World Cleanup Day and benefits from the collaboration of volunteers at Qué Celeste and the Consell de Formentera, which will provide material for cleaning and rubbish collection. Participants should meet at 9.30am in front of La Mola church and wear appropriate footwear.

The other cleanup session will happen on 24 September in Es Carnatge as part of Qué Celeste Festival. Es Carnatge is one of the areas with the highest concentration of plastics on the island. The Consell de Formentera will provide support for the second session as well, as will volunteers from environmental organisations present at Qué Celeste Festival. A workshop will be held at Es Carnatge beach to raise awareness about microplastics and how they harm the environment. Participants should meet in Cala en Baster at 10.00am and wear appropriate footwear.
