Upgrades and retrofits ahead of return to classrooms

foto 2022ix milloresThe Formentera Offices of Island Services and Education are pleased to report on upgrades and retrofits completed at local early-learning centres and primary schools this summer. Crews eliminated architectural barriers, reinstalled water fountains removed during the pandemic and oversaw various maintenance and improvement operations. Interventions were determined based on requests collected from administrative teams, parents' associations and student councils.

Work included the following
CEIP Mestre Lluís Andreu:
Architectural barriers were eliminated at the main access point to the Tramuntana building and the pavement was standardised. Building on refurbishments that were started last year, fans were installed in several classrooms. The works brigade of the Formentera Office of Island Services painted classroom interiors, cleaned, weeded, collected pruning debris and cleaned inner and outer courtyards. Doorknobs, windows and sink taps were also repaired. Two weeks from now, crews will mount a wooden pergola alongside the sport pitches and set it up in another part of the courtyard. The brigade will also lay black asphalt fabric to reduce heat absorption and perform upgrades next to the basketball court.

CEIP Sant Ferran de ses Roques:
In the school that opened last year, water taps were installed in playgrounds and corridors to facilitate watering and cleaning, classroom interiors were cleaned and painted, a 11x11-metre sandbox was installed around the new swing in the dirt courtyard of the primary school, which was also weeded and cleaned. A drip irrigation system was installed alongside trees planted nearby. Shade screens were put up outdoors and, in the weeks ahead, blinds will go up in the offices and in the rest of the windows facing the façade. A propane gas system was installed for the school's new canteen service. Underground rubbish and recycling containers previously located at the school entrance were moved as well.

At the two schools, bike racks requested this September and new shade structures will be installed in the coming weeks.

CEIP El Pilar de la Mola:
In La Mola, the brigade polished and varnished the wooden shack and outdoor picnic tables and painted classrooms and outdoor areas. Crews performed upkeep on the fence and repairs on an outdoor bell and in the portable classroom.

In addition to work performed by the technical services brigade, the Consell de Formentera spent roughly €32,000 contracting outside firms to oversee specific operations. Maintenance and improvement work will continue at schools during the school year.

Next Monday, 'Ajuntament Vell' welcomes Irina Zadek's 'El arte de vivir'

The Formentera Office of Culture is pleased to announce that 13 to 24 September, "Ajuntament Vell" exhibition space will host "El arte de vivir", an exhibition of photography by Irina Zadek.

The exhibition is composed of twenty-three photographs of various sizes, and documents six artists and artisans who live and work on the island. The display reflects subjects' connections with their creations, their work and Formentera. The photographer traces this focus on subjects' working worlds to a desire "to give them greater visibility because they are an important part of our society".

Zadek has been a resident of Formentera since 2006. Two years earlier, she began her career as a photographer. In her work, Zadek explores human beings and their connections and relationships.

"El arte de vivir" opens Monday 12 September. It can be seen at Sala d'Exposicions "Ajuntament Vell" 11.00am to 2.00pm and 7.00pm to 9.00pm, Monday to Saturday.

The gallery is closed Sundays, holidays and Monday mornings.

Formentera to get updated statistical data on visiting tourists

foto 2022ix estadistiques turismeToday Ana Juan, Consell de Formentera president, together with Iago Negueruela, Balearic minister of economic model, tourism and labour; Alejandra Ferrer, Consell de Formentera vice president and councillor of tourism, and Llorenç Pou, general director in the Balearics of economic model and employment, announced in press conference that Formentera will now have disaggregated tourism data after intense and coordinated efforts between the Balearic Institute of Statistics (Institut Balear d'Estadística, IBESTAT) and the National Institute of Statistics (Instituto Nacional de Estadística, INE).

In this way the Balearic Government addresses a long-standing local plea and methodological effort to obtain disaggregated data for the island. The data will provide a clearer picture of local tourism and a better understanding of Formentera's visitors and related trends in the short, medium and long term.

President Juan said that differentiated data between the islands marked the fulfilment of a local request and called it "very good news". "This instrument will afford us a more complete understanding –of the tourists who visit us; of excursionistes, which we've always said that Formentera needs to regulate; of tourist spending, and of issuing markets– in definitive data that help us design promotional policies and complement the data of the Formentera Data Observatory".

Vice President Ferrer welcomed the fulfilment of Formentera's request to have data segregated by islands, and voiced hopes that now "IBESTAT and the Formentera Data Observatory can collaborate and unify methodologies for more accurate data. This will put us in a position to determine promotional policies, see where tourists spend their money and direct our support for various sectors. This information will directly impact residents and their quality of life".

IBESTAT will provide Formentera's tourism data as it already does with Eivissa, Menorca and Mallorca: monthly in summer and quarterly the rest of the year.

Day-trippers, a differential element
Data for Formentera will not only include the number of tourists, visitor profiles, spending and origin, it will also be uniquely differentiated. Since Formentera is an island where some visitors arrive in the morning and leave the same day, information on these visitors, known as "excursionistes" (day-trippers), has been included.

From now on, Formentera will have statistics on the number of visiting day-trippers.

Greatest recovery of tourist spending
Tourism on Formentera has rebounded as on neighbouring islands and currently tourism is more profitable than it was before the pandemic. Tourist spending has grown 44% since 2021 and is up 19% compared to 2019. Total tourist spending (i.e. cumulative spending from January to July) is higher than it was in 2019 and Formentera is the only island that by last year had essentially returned to 2019 levels. This increased spending has been achieved without changes in the number of tourists, a sign of increased profitability.

This Tuesday, Sant Ferran Punt de Lectura reopens with story time from "Jully Papallona"

The Formentera Office of Culture is pleased to announce a story time at 5.00pm on Tuesday 13 September at the Sant Ferran Reading Point (Punt de Lectura). The event is the first cultural activity for children as the Punt de Lectura reopens and local pupils return to classrooms.

Attendees will hear the story of Sofia, a five-year-old girl who does not want to go to bed and asks her mother to recount "Jully Papallona", Sofia's favourite story. The inspiring tale highlights the adventurous and determined spirit of children, as well as love and respect for ancient and ancestral trees. Told by Laura Asensio, who plays an array of characters, the story lasts 45 minutes and is for pupils in year four of primary school and up.

Asensio was born in Barcelona in 1978. With a great passion for theatre, she began her first course in 1999, where she learned techniques in body expression. She developed a great interest in gestural, movement and object theatre, finally opting for clown theatre, which she studied at Berty Tovías' theatre school in Barcelona. In 2004 she took part in the European Theatre Festival, part of Barcelona's Tantaranbana theatre programme, with a troupe known as Papinrom. For five years, she worked in Scotland as a hospital clown with Hearts&Minds and created her own shows, including "The clown & the ring". She also leads puppet-making workshops for parents as a method of interaction with children. Back in her hometown, she taught body expression to the elderly, various workshops for babies and mothers and took part in programmes related to theatre and body expression for people with functional diversity. Currently, she works as an actress at the Granja Escola of Palautordera and travels telling stories and leading workshops at libraries and festivals.
