Mar Novell’s ‘Sòl de Formentera (Una mirada subjectiva)’ settles into ‘Ajuntament Vell’

cartell 2021 sol de formenteraThe Formentera Department of Culture is pleased to report that from 7.00pm, on Monday 16 August, the “Ajuntament Vell” municipal gallery welcomes “Sòl de Formentera (Una mirada subjectiva)”, a collection of collages put together by Mar Novell. The initiative took root in 2020, on photographic strolls which led Novell across the island’s network of roads. The project’s connection to the island runs deep, with Novell’s point of departure and natural habitat both contained within the confines of Formentera.

Novell’s photos offer a comprehensive vision of the ground on Formentera: near the sea, dusty, sandy, asphaulted, rocky, etc. The images find Novell translating a vertical gaze palpably and visibly: eyes look not at the beauty on the horizon but the earth upon which they tread. That gaze acts as a channel, interconnecting the outside world with the world within. It is, thus, a subjective gaze that changes the anonymous image into a feat of artistic framing.

Born in Lleida in 1975, Mar Novell got her education in humanism and culture. Novell’s professional work has seen her in advertising, communication and cultural management.

“Sòl de Formentera” will be on view at the “Ajuntament Vell” gallery from 11.00am to 2.00pm and 7.00pm to 9.00pm, Monday to Saturday, 17 to 28 August 2021. The gallery is closed Sundays and Monday mornings.

Formentera unveils renters’ clause to curb house parties, support owners of holiday rental properties and advocate for their legal stability

cartell 2021 clausulaThe Formentera Departments of Tourism Planning and Interior are pleased to offer owners of vacation rentals a clause which aims to tackle disturbances and conduct that is at odds with Covid-19 protocol. The document highlights current restrictions on social gatherings in domestic spaces, including the ban on parties, and asks tourists to pledge to comply with rules, informing them that violators risk immediate nullification of their rental agreement. Renters are also asked for details about other houseguests, with co-renters subject to applicable fines.

“This document is intended to educate tourists when they first get here so that they know their obligations”, said President Ferrer. “Plus it creates legal support for property owners and law enforcement agencies so they can act faster and coordinate their response”.

The document will be sent to tourist boards, estate agencies and tour operators, and can be downloaded in Catalan, Spanish and English from the Covid section of the Consell de Formentera website, sub-section ‘Covid Clause - Rentals’.

Last week a list of vacation rental properties, together with the names and telephone numbers of the people and tourism businesses who own them, was delivered to Formentera Local Police in an effort to improve local law enforcement’s response to house parties. Ferrer said that the new document, which she described as “a step forward” and “clear progress”, would also mean expanded collaboration.

Signed documents are sent to FLP so that, if need be, a fine can be issued. Owners will also receive assistance as necessary from law enforcement in making renters vacate the premises.

Local lifeguards get two new lookout and first-aid posts

foto 2021 casetes platgesThe Formentera Department of Interior is pleased to announce that the municipal lifeguard service has acquired two new booths for surveillance and first-aid. Priced at just under €25,237 (VAT included), the structures have a watchtower at the top and two separate areas —one for storage and staff changing rooms, and another with a first aid kit to care for the injured— down below.

Lifeguard service
Financed by the Consell de Formentera, the island’s seaside lifeguard service is operational between 1 May and 31 October. Ten lifeguards and a coordinator oversee safety on local beaches from 1 May until 1 June. The addition of 12 more lifeguards in June brings the total head count to 23, before dipping again to eleven —ten lifeguards and a coordinator— for the entire month of October.

In low season (i.e., May and October) lifeguards patrol Illetes, Llevant and Arenals. In June, July, August and September, in addition to these beaches, Pas des Trucadors, El Tanga, Es Pujols, Cala Saona and Es Caló are monitored as well.

Accessible, cardio care-equipped beaches
Arenals and Es Pujols beaches have access points for swimmers with reduced mobility. The service is available when the green flag flies, from 12 noon to 5.00pm. The service is available 1 May to 31 October at Arenals and 1 June to 30 September in Es Pujols.

In 2021, Formentera’s July waste surpasses 2019 figures by 7.8%

cartell 2021 per una illa mesThe Formentera Department of Environment reports that this past July islanders generated nearly 8% more waste than the same month in 2019. Total collection for the period stood at 1,373 tonnes (t), compared to 1,273 t two years prior. Meanwhile, the municipal cleaning contractor logged a running count from January to July of 4,559 t compared to 4,791 t for the same period in 2020. And, focusing on July alone, crews collected a total of 1,094 t — 25.5 t more in 2021 than in 2020.

Improved day pickup and checks

Environment chief Antonio J. Sanz explained that increased output since July meant expanded pickup needs at midday, since rules require normal grey-bin rubbish to be binned between 8.00pm and 11.00pm. On 5 August alone, the reinforced midday service hauled off a total of 8,300 kg of rubbish.

The Consell asks islanders, tourists and businesses to be mindful of others and use appropriate containers when disposing of waste. Items that are not fit for bins, including MSW whose daytime disposal in bins is prohibited, can be disposed of free of charge at the island’s household waste transfer station, or Deixalleria. The Deixalleria is open Monday to Saturday, 9.00am to 1.30pm, and Monday to Friday afternoons, 3.30pm to 5.30pm. The pickup service for household appliances and furniture can be reached by dialling 900 102 656.

In 2021, Formentera unveiled an educational push called ‘For a cleaner island’, together with reinforced inspections, to encourage the correct use of bins.

Disposal times at streetside bins:
MSW and similar rubbish: 8.00pm to 11.00pm. [Dumping outside these hours is punishable by fine.]
Glass: 8.00am to 11.00pm. [Dumping outside these hours is punishable by fine.]
Paper, cardboard, packaging, clothes, etc.: any time.

Door-to-door pickup at businesses:
Summer: daily, 8.00pm to 4.00am.
Winter: Sunday to Friday, 8.00pm to 4.00am.
Es Pujols, summer (1 June to 30 September): daily, 8.00pm to 11.00pm.
