The Formentera Department of Culture is pleased to report that from 7.00pm, on Monday 16 August, the “Ajuntament Vell” municipal gallery welcomes “Sòl de Formentera (Una mirada subjectiva)”, a collection of collages put together by Mar Novell. The initiative took root in 2020, on photographic strolls which led Novell across the island’s network of roads. The project’s connection to the island runs deep, with Novell’s point of departure and natural habitat both contained within the confines of Formentera.
Novell’s photos offer a comprehensive vision of the ground on Formentera: near the sea, dusty, sandy, asphaulted, rocky, etc. The images find Novell translating a vertical gaze palpably and visibly: eyes look not at the beauty on the horizon but the earth upon which they tread. That gaze acts as a channel, interconnecting the outside world with the world within. It is, thus, a subjective gaze that changes the anonymous image into a feat of artistic framing.
Born in Lleida in 1975, Mar Novell got her education in humanism and culture. Novell’s professional work has seen her in advertising, communication and cultural management.
“Sòl de Formentera” will be on view at the “Ajuntament Vell” gallery from 11.00am to 2.00pm and 7.00pm to 9.00pm, Monday to Saturday, 17 to 28 August 2021. The gallery is closed Sundays and Monday mornings.

The Formentera Departments of Tourism Planning and Interior are pleased to offer owners of vacation rentals a clause which aims to tackle disturbances and conduct that is at odds with Covid-19 protocol. The document highlights current restrictions on social gatherings in domestic spaces, including the ban on parties, and asks tourists to pledge to comply with rules, informing them that violators risk immediate nullification of their rental agreement. Renters are also asked for details about other houseguests, with co-renters subject to applicable fines.
The Formentera Department of Interior is pleased to announce that the municipal lifeguard service has acquired two new booths for surveillance and first-aid. Priced at just under €25,237 (VAT included), the structures have a watchtower at the top and two separate areas —one for storage and staff changing rooms, and another with a first aid kit to care for the injured— down below.
Consell de Formentera president Alejandra Ferrer, and the director of Formenterers Solidaris, Maria Costa, have put their signatures on a €25,500 partnership agreement between local government and the hometown NGO. The deal will support food deliveries to Formentera’s most vulnerable, as well as cooperation projects in developing countries in 2021. Consell vice-president Ana Juan and Sara Miguel, the deputy director of Formenterers Solidaris, also attended the signing.
The Formentera Department of Environment reports that this past July islanders generated nearly 8% more waste than the same month in 2019. Total collection for the period stood at 1,373 tonnes (t), compared to 1,273 t two years prior. Meanwhile, the municipal cleaning contractor logged a running count from January to July of 4,559 t compared to 4,791 t for the same period in 2020. And, focusing on July alone, crews collected a total of 1,094 t — 25.5 t more in 2021 than in 2020.
