Formentera’s “Lil’ Recyclers” record 3,457kg haul

foto 2021 ecovidrio2The Formentera Department of Environment is pleased to report that local schoolchildren collected a grand total of 3,457kg of recyclable glass waste as part of ‘Los Peque Recicladores’ (Lil’ Recyclers), an educational push promoted in association with Ecovidrio. Environment chief Antonio J. Sanz said the initiative was about “educating schoolchildren on the importance of recycling glass containers” and claimed it had been successful in terms of both the volume of glass recycled and the number of pupils who participated.

Roughly 614 six to twelve year olds from the island’s four primary schools took part in the initiative, which ran from 19 April to 31 May. The winning school, CEIP Virgen Milagrosa, will get a €500 gift card.

The campaign included a competition which pitted local schoolchildren against each other to see who could recycle the most glass containers.

To help participants reach their goal, each school received a green container emblazoned with ‘Lil’ Recyclers’ graphics and personalised with the school name. The school that collected the most glass per was pupil got the €500 prize.

This Friday, the 13th Passarel·la de Moda takes over es Pujols

foto 2021 passarelaEarlier today the Formentera Department of Commerce unveiled the 2021 programme for Formentera’s Passarel·la de Moda. Eighteen local creators will supply the designs as the hometown runway show turns thirteen at 9.00pm, Friday 2 July in es Pujols’ plaça d’Europa. To talk about it, commerce councillor Ana Juan was joined in press conference by coordinator Amalia Mora and a group of participating designers.

The “returns” invoked by this year’s tagline, ‘Retorno’, are many: a return to normalcy after a year of complications; return to the iconic plaça d’Europa setting and return to the Passarel·la’s trajectory. Ana Juan insisted the word also underscored local government’s faithful support for the island’s designers. For the deputy premiere and commerce chief, the stars of this year’s Passarel·la are the creative minds driving it: “Their work is proof that, 2020’s challenges aside, fashion and design constitute a thriving, if relatively undersized, local industry”. Juan additionally drew attention to the success of last year’s online edition.

Participating creators include Janne Bikinis, Hippie Shop Formentera, Kavra de Formentera, Equilibre, Simona Colzi&le voyeur vintage, Vintage Ibiza-Formentera, Macramé&Acho joyas, Molly Mallone, Michele Crocitto, Elena Hurtado & Lorenzo Pepe “OBI”, Laura López, Eva Cardona, Ur Joies, Flavio Cocho and Majoral.

Amalia Mora insisted plaça d’Europa would prove a “spacious and high visibility” backdrop, besides offering “an added layer of security”. Features will include jewellery, handbags, wedding dresses and party dresses, she said, not to mention top-shelf avant-garde creations inspired by the natural spaces, sea and colours of Formentera. And she told the Passarel·la’s faithful crowd of tourists and islanders to prepare for surprises in this year’s collections, along with some new faces. Among them is Laura Lopez, who completed design studies earlier this year.

The Passarel·la’s professional models are from Eivissa firm Deva Modelos, and the gala will be presented by journalist Montse Montsalve and the young Formentera musician Miquel Tur.

Finally, the Consell applauded the Passarel·la’s sponsors. This year’s event had a budget of €35,000.

Formentera presses energy firms to share surpluses with local grid

foto 2021 ple junyMembers of local government gathered today for their June full-house assembly, a session which secured unanimous approval for an initiative urging energy supply companies on the island to ensure new and existing private facilities can divert surplus production across the network in compliance with current legislation. “Energy must be democratised”, insisted environment chief Antonio J Sanz, pointing to challenges faced by both existing and newly commissioned facilities as they try to alleviate strain on es Ca Marí plant by feeding their surplus energy into the grid”. Sanz also highlighted the measure’s snug fit with three of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, including affordable and non-polluting energy, responsible production and consumption and climate action.

Likewise, cross-party support meant definitive approval for an ordinance regulating the cost of local government’s involvement at, access to and exercise of activities within the power plant, as well as for temporary permits. Planning chief Rafael González said fees for new activities would be subject to a 50% reduction till year end, with the fee for title changes and simple modifications dropping 83.3%, from €1,200 to €200.

Another measure that won cross-party backing was the draft of a plan to rethink spaces and uses of buildings where the Consell provides public services. Governance chief Rafael Ramírez tied the Formentera government’s purchase and retrofitting of buildings where services are provided “to local needs and demands” and said the local administration was “clearly facing a facilities shortage”. The upshot, said Ramírez, is that “now more than ever, we need to look at how public buildings and spaces are used and adapted and outline strategies to optimise how this is done”.

Assembly members also came together to back the appointment of Lina Mayans Tur, Andreu Ferrer Juan and Javier González Granado to the island’s ethics and good governance commission. According to Ramírez, who also heads up the transparency department, “the aim of this code of ethics is twofold; first, to chart our course on a policy of integrity, and second, to set our guiding principles and standards of conduct for good governance”.

Proclamations
Finally, plenary participants unanimously adopted two official declarations. The first of these was related to World Refugee Day and presented by Rafael Ramírez, who additionally directs the social welfare office. After giving an overview of global migratory crises since the twentieth century, Ramírez insisted, “Our current situation demands a greater and more determined commitment to the defence of human rights, the right to asylum and the protection of refugees”. Assembly members agreed “to show solidarity with all refugees and denounce the systematic violation of their rights”, and to urge international institutions “to provide urgent, effective and permanent responses to the current migratory challenge”.

In a measure that was tabled by equality chief Vanessa Parellada, assembly members approved a statement to mark World LGTBI Pride Day. “Forty years have gone by since delcaration of men and women’s right to sexual self-determination”, said Parellada, “and discrimination and hate speech against LGTBI people and increasingly common fear-motived hate crimes represent a serious threat to respect for fundamental rights in the EU”. Decision-makers “strongly condemned any discrimination”, voiced “particular concern at the upsurge in hate speech” and urged “institutions and civil society to intensify efforts to disseminate best practices and build cooperation in this fight”.

The €482,723 park sits on a 2,727-m2 lot and has assorted outdoor fitness structures and three skating circuits including a skating area, a “street” park and a “bowl”. There is also a wellness circuit for the elderly, landscaping and recreational areas.

Grand opening tomorrow
For World Skateboarding Day this week, the Casal de Joves has scheduled a skateboard-themed evening tomorrow from 8.00pm.

Youth chief Vanessa Parellada shared her satisfaction at being able to preside over the park’s opening — “scores of local youth have pressed for this for some time now”, she affirmed. The councillor pointed out that young people were a key part of the park’s design, offering feedback to ensure the new construction fit their needs.

Features
The 255-m2 skating area is obstacle-free and hemmed in by a long bench which doubles as seating for park users and their companions.

The 238-m2 “street” park features hand-polished concrete and characteristic obstacles like ramps, benches, platforms, handrails and ledges, often imitating street furniture found in parks and plazas.

The park’s most eye-catching feature is its 617-m2 “bowl”. Cut into the ground-level upper platform, it is a pool-shaped hole with depths of -3.75m, -2m, -2.2m and -2.5m and radii of 2.4m, 2.8m, 3m, 3.3m and 2.4m. Surrounding it are landscaped green spaces, and the days ahead will see shaded areas, benches and a walking route incorporated as well.

Heart-healthy circuit for seniors
The 285-m2 old people’s fitness circuit and exercise machines will soon include a rest area.
