Monday marks return of 6.00am ferry to Eivissa

foto 2020 conexionsEarlier today Consell de Formentera president Alejandra Ferrer and Balearic mobility and housing minister Marc Pons were joined by Adolfo Utor, chief of the transport company Baleària, in making public the details of a partnership between the Govern balear and Balèaria to re-establish early-bird service from Formentera to Eivissa.

From Monday 16 November, islanders will have the option of a 6.00am ferry to Eivissa. The partnership resolves an issue that was laid bare by Formentera residents who petitioned to make the early-morning ferry service to Eivissa mandatory.

“Maritime mobility goes beyond leisure”, said President Ferrer, “it’s a question of basic needs and essential services which are available exclusively on Eivissa”. She applauded Baleària’s efforts to restore the 6.00am trip but encouraged Mr Pons to continue working to bring back the 10.30pm Eivissa-to-Formentera journey as well. The last ferry currently sets off from Eivissa every night at 9.30pm.

The Balèaria boss said the early-bird service would operate weekdays in passenger-only “eco fast” ships that the ferry company added to its fleet two years ago. The ferries were specially designed for the Eivissa-Formentera route and have a reduced environmental footprint.

Also on hand at the presentation were local mobility councillor Rafael González and the head of the Balearic office of sea and air transport, Xavier Ramis.

Nine students begin training as youth leisure supervisors

foto 2020 curs formacioNine students will take part in a training course organised by the Formentera Entrepreneurism Department to prepare 16- to 29-year-old participants for employment as leisure supervisors.

Students will sign apprenticeship contracts and receive six months of additional on-the-job training in Consell de Formentera-run leisure centres.

Deputy Consell president and chief of the entrepreneurism office Ana Juan extended her welcome to participants and highlighted hopes the training would give a leg-up to individuals currently joining the local labour force.

Instructional costs and recrutement of the course director are funded by the vocational training and employment wing of the Balearic Employment Agency (SOIB) as part of a programme to make youth and adolescent recreational programmes more dynamic. A cross-cutting pedagogical approach means students will also finish the course with A2-level English accreditation.

Consell de Formentera offers Farmers’ Co-op €130K in funding in 2020

foto 2020 conveni coopThe president of the Consell de Formentera and the chairman of the Formentera Farmers’ Co-operative (Cooperativa del Camp), Alejandra Ferrer and Jaume Escandell, respectively, signed a joint action agreement to fund the Co-op’s work to re-energise the local agrarian sector and beautify rural and scenic spaces. The €78,000 included in the deal is in addition to €52,000 linked to a collaborative agreement the parties signed in May, for a grand total of €130,000 in funding in 2020.

Considering the importance of the island’s agricultural sector, President Ferrer said the Consell’s renewed support for the Co-op was particularly crucial amid the ongoing Covid-19 crisis: “It is the number one tool we have to protect local landscapes, power local production and economic diversification and care for our land as islanders have traditionally done in the past”.

Emergency orders meant an earlier signing of the joint action accord was placed on hold, and an interim agreement was reached to help the Co-op remain economically viable and fully operational. Agriculture councillor Josep Marí and Co-op director Carlos Marí were also on hand at the signing.

Joint action agreements are signed annually between the Consell de Formentera and Farmers’ Co-op to support local agriculture. Last year’s agreement carried funding to the tune of €115,000.
