Sala de Cultura resumes weekly programme of films

cartell 2020 cinema xiThe Formentera Department of Culture reports that the Sala de Cultura will soon welcome islanders back for its programme of cinema. Two weekly sessions —Fridays at 8.30pm and Sundays at 8.00pm— will take place from 6 November. This month’s programme can be found at agendaformentera.cat and on the Facebook page of Cinema Formentera.

Culture consellera Susana Labrador highlighted recent programming like the summer outdoor film series Cinema a la Fresca, as well as stage productions which were scheduled pre-pandemia. “We’re in a position to fully comply with public health orders from the regional government, so we’ve opted to resume screenings at the cinema”, Labrador said, adding that officials would be “watching rules changes closely and retooling cultural programming accordingly”.

Cinema capacity is currently 104, masks are mandatory at all times and moviegoers will be asked to sanitise hands and maintain a safe distance. Food and drinks will not be permitted. Advance reservations will not be taken, rather, tickets can be purchased at the box office before every session.

Consell offers Catalan classes to hospital staff and Guardia Civil

foto 2020 curs hospital de formenteraThe Formentera Language Advisory Service (Servei d’Assessorament Lingüístic/SAL) reports that language are back on the calendar for health workers at the Hospital de Formentera and local Guardia Civil agents. The first of two beginners’ (A2) courses is scheduled for evenings in the conference hall of the hospital, with eight students currently enrolled; classes for the second course will be held at the Guardia Civil barracks and attended by two students.

Since first partnering in November 2012 with the local hospital to propose language instruction for personnel, the Consell de Formentera has underwritten an exhaustive range of Catalan courses to help students prepare for successive exams. Put on hold in March amid the declaration of emergency orders, the current courses are geared towards the next round of Govern de les Illes Balears-announced tests in January.

Also originally scheduled for a March start, the course for the pair of Guardia Civil officers marks a first and is the product of a partnership between the Eivissa-Formentera Office of the National Administration (Administració General de l’Estat).

‘Promote knowledge and use of the local language’
Language policy chief Raquel Guasch said she was thrilled to see “the slow but steady return to normal of these classes where are designed to promote knowledge and use of Formentera’s local language among social stakeholders connected to the community”. The consellera affirmed, “We hope this initial crop of classes for Guardia Civil officers will be the first of many, and are envisioning progressively higher levels, like B1 or B2”.

Public health protocol will be respected in full, with classrooms constantly ventilated, mandatory masks for students and teachers, social distancing and, when possible, classes outdoors.

Winter hours start Sunday 1 November for metred parking

foto 2020 zona blavaThe Formentera Department of Mobility reports that from Sunday 1 November, winter hours will take effect for metred “blue zone” parking in La Savina, Sant Francesc and Sant Ferran, while Es Pujols will hold off on reactivating the scheme until summer. Winter hours apply 9.00am to 2.00pm and 4.00pm to 8.00pm Monday to Saturday until 1 May. Parking is free on Sundays and bank holidays.

Vehicles in winter can stay parked in a zona blava spot for up to three consecutive days — up from just one day in summertime. For their part, drivers who park in green zone spaces, which are restricted to authorised vehicles and accredited motorists La Savina, can leave their vehicle parked for up to 15 days — a limit that remains the same in summer and winter.

Renewals in December
The mobility office reminds islanders that motorists who renewed a metred parking authorisation in March amid the invocation of emergency orders will see their permit expire in late December. Drivers accredited to park in blue zone spaces must renew their authorisation at year’s end, either by appointment at the OAC or on the OVAC.

25 November
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women begins at 11.00am with an information stand in Sant Francesc’s Plaça de la Constitució where visitors can help make and hang signs.

Entertainment starts at 4.30pm with Bloco Colubraria’s batucada drum performance, followed by a 5.00pm rally with Covid-19 protocol in place. Women may volunteer to share written work. A reading will then be given of the manifesto, with a representation of Chilean group LASTESIS’ “The Rapist in Your Path”.

Equality director Vanessa Parellada indicated that Covid-19 sanitary measures would be in place at every activity, and highlighted a crosscutting organising approach that included Espai Dones and numerous departments of the Consell de Formentera—“because we need to tackle gender violence on as many fronts as possible”. Finally, Parellada asked islanders to be vigilant and take action if they see gender violence: “It’s not a personal problem and it’s not a family problem. It’s a social problem, so looking away isn’t going to work. We need everyone to take an active role”, she said.
