Formentera hosts keynote event for Balearic celebration of European Day of Languages

Monday 26 September, Formentera will host the keynote event commemorating European Day of Languages in the Balearic Islands. Organised by the Directorate General of Language Policy in collaboration with the Formentera Office of Language Policy, the event will be presided over by Ana Juan, Consell de Formentera president; Miquel Company, regional minister of European funds, university and culture; and Beatriz Defior, regional director general of language policy.

As part of the event, which kicks off at 6.00pm in the Consell de Formentera auditorium, Vicent Pitarch Almela will host a lecture titled 'Linguistic diversity and social structuring: a tribute to Joan Fuster'. Pitarch is a doctor in Catalan philology, member of Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC) and IEC delegate in Castelló. The talk will be followed by a musical performance by singer Pilar Mena.

The event is open to all and will be live-streamed on diaeuropeullengues.caib.cat.

European Day of Languages
The European Day of Languages has been celebrated every 26 September since 2001 on the initiative of the Council of Europe and European Union. The day aims to highlight the importance of language learning; increase multilingualism and cultural intercommunication; promote the richness of Europe's linguistic and cultural diversity, and encourage lifelong language learning in and out of school.
