Formentera’s system to count and cap vehicles turns three

foto 2021 for.ecoThe Formentera Department of Mobility reports that from Thursday 24 June to Tuesday 7 September, motorists are required to carry a special permit to operate a vehicle on the island, with FDE chief Rafael González pointing out that, for formentera.eco’s fourth summer, enforcement would be extended to the last week of June and first week of September, as agreed by the Consell d’Entitats.

The councillor’s assessment was positive as regulations took effect again today, when a total of 15,390 vehicles were cleared for use on local roads. The following is a breakdown of permits already issued:

In the previous week, visitors accounted for, on average, 145 daily reservations. As of today’s date, availability existed every day until the end of enforcement on 7 September.

2021 limits
This summer, the maximum number of vehicles in circulation on the island has been set at 20,591, or 8% less than the previous year. That yearly target is expected to decrease by 4% annually until 2023, for an overall four-year reduction of 16%.

Consell de Formentera president Alejandra Ferrer identified overcrowding as Formentera’s number-one threat, and said that with terrestrial vehicles under control, attention could be turned to regulating maritime transport through avenues like trip frequency on the regular ferry lines and controlled moorage along the coast.

Reservations
Permits to drive on the island can be obtained quickly and easily on the formentera.eco website. Visitors must pay €1/day for cars and 50 cents for motor-scooters (minimums—€5 for the former and €2.50 for the latter—are also established). Residents of the Balearics and drivers of electric vehicles don’t pay a thing, but they must still complete the permit process on formentera.eco.

Information
Details about the bid to relieve strain on Formentera roads are provided to anyone who buys a ticket with a ferry company offering travellers the option of transporting a vehicle, so everyone visiting the island with a vehicle is guaranteed to have already received the necessary information.

Forty-three companies are authorised to rent vehicles on Formentera, and they too must use www.formentera.eco to obtain the necessary permits.

Controls
As the count and cap scheme turns three, specific changes have sought to improve monitoring of in- and outbound vehicles. At a high-traffic point of passage, number plate reading cameras controlling arriving and departing vehicles have been updated and relocated to boost efficiency, and special signage has gone up to ensure drivers know about the system.

Motorists who operate a vehicle on Formentera without the required authorisation face minimum fines of €1,000.
