Collaborative accord between Formentera Council and Fundació Illes Balears for cultural patrimony

molivellmola 2013

This morning, the president of the Formentera Island Council, Jaume Ferrer, signed a collaborative agreement with the president of Fundació Illes Balears with respect to cultural patrimony and the opening of El molí vell (the old windmill) of La Mola.

The goal of the accord is to establish the terms and conditions of a collaborative effort between the Formentera Council and the Fundació in order to endow the windmill with an operational staff and a set of visiting hours.

The Council will carry out the formalities necessary to contracting a staff member to oversee surveillance of the grounds and provide informational services. The funds allotted for the position's salary will not exceed 5,500€ and these will be associated with the 336.13100 portion of the Council's 2013 budget.

Thus, Fundació Illes Balears will make the old windmill available for use by the public administration so that the site – recognised as a cultural asset in the Balearics – can receive cultural visits and be enjoyed by the general public. Exceptionally, the scheduling of visits outside normal opening hours will also be possible through written communication with the Fundació.

Documentation of the old windmill of La Mola dates back to 1778. It was one of the seven wind-operated flour mills that existed on the island, and – its interior machinery still intact – is the best-preserved today. The site is included in the Formentera Catalogue of Cultural Patrimony with level A protection and is currently the property of Fundació Illes Balears, which purchased the windmill on 25 November 1993. Thanks to a complete artisanal reconstruction, the windmill can today be viewed in perfect condition.
