The Centre Antoni Tur “Gabrielet” welcomes two exhibitions for the month of August

Throughout the entire month of August Formentera's Centre Antoni Tur “Gabrielet” will host two exhibitions. One, a collection of ceramics craftsman Àngel Berenguer's work over the last twenty years, and the other, an homage to the agrarian landscapes of Formentera.

The exhibition “Mirada Enrere” (“A Look Back”) by Àngel Berenguer will be on display in the artisanry wing of the centre from 1 to 15 August. The centre's agricultural wing will hold the project “Agropaisatges Insulars” (“Island Farmscapes”), a collection of photos available for visit through August.

Mirada Enrere
This exhibition by Àngel Berenguer, who has called Formentera home since the Eighties, is a collection of different works by the ceramic craft artist. Berenguer crafts pieces following a format that resembles the one used in painting, and is one of few in Formentera to use this technique in his creative process.

The artist Àngel Berenguer (Fraga, 1952) discovered Formentera in 1970 and found love for the craft thanks to his mentor, “Gabrielet”, with whom he went on to work for more than ten years.

In the construction of his works of art, Berenguer's materials range from paints to oils, clay to cement, and even wood, which the artist mixes with a crystalline base to achieve his type of metallic pigments. Àngel Berenguer points out that every ceramic artist has his own range of colours, his own magisterial formulas, each unique and unrepeatable.

The Centre Antoni Tur “Gabrielet” maintains a year-long programme of quality exhibitions with Formentera's artists and artisans, all in the interest of sharing locally-crafted works and bringing disciplines like painting, sculpture, ceramics and photography within the scope of local residents. The Formentera Council has taken firm steps in the promotion of official accreditation in artisanry, granting its own recognised qualification to 67 artisans who have the “Gabrielet” artisanal centre at their disposition for the exhibition of their work.

Agropaisatges insulars
AGROPAISATGES is an exhibition created within the framework of the cooperative project Agropaisajes Insulares.

The exhibition is a collection of seven panels on the different elements that form the farming landscape of Eivissa and Formentera and their different functions. The images deal with rural biodiversity, livestock and the other ethnological elements involved. Serving to compare the situation of island farms today with the situation in years past, each panel presents photographs from the middle of the last century as well as more current images.

The exhibition is the second effort to be created under Projecte Leader, which has collaborated with two Formentera farms on “Agropaisajes Insulares” projects. Projecte Leader consisted in an economic and aesthetic valuing of traditional farming systems from the viewpoint of the land and water.

In this way, homage is made to the farmscapes of Formentera where to this day the land continues to play a pivotal role. Sustaining an important part of the island's rural population; providing stunning visual settings, a wealth of different ecological elements and high-quality food products, these factors remain key for a growing number both of local residents and tourists.

Since the year 2007, the Formentera Island Council has formed part of the Grup d'Acció Local per al Desenvolupament Rural (Local Action Group for Rural Development) in Eivissa and Formentera. The group's objective is to effect quality of life improvements among the islands' rural populations, slow the flow of residents leaving rural communities and increase the economic viability of Formentera's rural businesses.
