Office of the Environment sets in motion special cleaning and maintenance operations on the island

contenidorsweb2013At the close of the 2013 tourist season, the Formentera Council's Office of the Environment contracted Cespa (concession-holder for the island's waste collection and street cleaning contracts) for a series of special cleaning and maintenance actions in different island towns.

First, the contractional obligation to repair imperfect rubbish containers was communicated to the Cespa company. At summer's end there was a total of 65 containers (some underground and others at surface level) located across the island. Many of these require minor repairs, such as replacement hatches and foot-pedals, repositioned stickers, fixed dents, etc. The Council will in this way attempt to maintain all such urban furniture in optimal conditions.

Likewise, accumulated waste will be removed and intensive cleaning will be undertaken in the immediate vicinity of rubbish containers. Such waste is usually left-over from local construction and demolition and improperly disposed of alongside bins.

Finally, also occurring presently is the municipal gardening service's preventative treatment of 80 palm trees to combat the becut vermell pest. Treatment includes application of a set of phytosanitary products whose use has been authorized to minimize this pest's expansion. Several cases of the becut vermell pest have already been reported here in Formentera.

For this reason the technical services of the Office of the Environment have urged the Port Authority to set in motion preventative treatment of the becut vermell on all the palm trees in the Port of La Savina, the remit of the Port Authority.
