Second phase of improvements to the Sant Ferran town centre

The president of the Formentera Island Council, Jaume Ferrer, together with Santi Juan, Formentera's councilor of Infrastructure, Agriculture and Stockbreeding, and two of the administration's staff specialists visited the town centre of Sant Ferran today to announce the beautification activity that is anticipated for the area.

Upon completion of construction of the Sant Ferran ring road – an infrastructural change that translated into very real improvements with regard to both traffic flow and available parking spaces – the Formentera Council wishes to restructure the inner portion of the town in an attempt to promote a more socially and commercially vibrant town centre.

Thus, the governing administration has commissioned a preliminary project from the Council's Office of Town Planning for the post-season rehabilitation of several Sant Ferran streets: Carrer Guillem de Montgrí; Avinguda Joan Castelló i Guasch; and Carrer València.

Sant Ferran has for years suffered a structural discontinuity caused by the convergence at the town's centre of two main roads, splitting the town in two. The goal of the planned construction is to give the town an increased sense of cohesion by reordering parking zones, widening pedestrian pavements and upgrading urban furniture where necessary.

Principal construction will occur at Avinguda de Joan Castelló i Guasch, the street that provides entry into Sant Ferran. The intention is to bring together the town into one cohesive unit and revitalise the neighbourhood around this street.

The goal of the project is to ameliorate the image held by Sant Ferran as a town, restructuring it in a way that leaves the centre more open, spacious and clean. It is hoped the resulting town will be a comfortable setting through which to take a stroll both night and day. To this end, the Formentera Council is currently involved in a number of complementary initiatives like the recently-completed Sant Ferran taxi stand and a new bus stop – still in the works – that will serve both regular-service buses and the tourist lines. All of these initiatives are aimed at making Sant Ferran an obligatory cultural stop on any tourist itinerary.

The Office of Town Planning intends to study various options for improvement, which, at the close of the tourist season, will be transferred to the Council of Community Involvement for debate with the neighbourhood association of Sant Ferran.

The Formentera Island Council will continue in its work improving the towns of the island through changes to infrastructure, as was the case with the recent Sant Ferran ring road project. It is hoped that the remodelling of the Sant Ferran centre will transform the town into a emblematic spot on Formentera map, making definitive qualitative improvements to the area.
