New improvements planned for centre of island tourism, Es Pujols

espujolsmillores2013

The president of the Formentera Island Council, Jaume Ferrer, joined this morning by Office of Infrastructure coordinator Francesc Ribas, presented a series of improvements for the town of Es Pujols, all part of the plan to improve infrastructure at the island's tourist capital par excellence.

Since the opening of the new Es Pujols bypass road and Plaça d'Europa underground car park, Es Pujols has begun an important transformation meant to shift what had become a tradition of low investment in the area. Both of the two projects helped reorganise the flow of traffic through the town centre, gaining physical space and in this way allowing for the execution of still other projects.

The modernising project planned for Es Pujols has an estimated cost of 10 million euros and will include the restructuring and repaving of roads, the creation of green bike-paths through the densely wooded zone at the town centre and the construction of new tourist facilities. All of the actions are intended to ameliorate the surroundings at aesthetic and infrastructural levels.

Of note among the plans are:
- An already-mentioned restructuring and repaving of the pedestrian roads between Avinguda Miramar and the Plaça d'Europa, as well as the restructuring and semi-pedestrianisation of Avinguda Miramar starting at Hotel “Sa Volta”. The project will mean improvements to existing networks of sewage, potable water, low-voltage power and telephone lines.
- Opening of the arterial connecting Carrers Aigua Dolça and Fonoll Marí, allowing for smoother access to the Plaça d'Europa car park; restructuring and updating of the parking spaces along Carrer Aigua Dolça, which will henceforth continue as a one-way arterial. The goal is to regain use of the totality of the area occupied by the actual street itself, and thus allow for the planning of a pedestrian path and a street for exclusive-use by residents and locals.
- Projects planned for the wooded zones of Es Pujols, with a network of green paths stretching from the town's water reservoir to Hotel “Sa Volta”. The project will include construction of pedestrian circuits upon wood-plank promenades replete with useful tourist information spots, areas of rest and recreation, systems of low-intensity illumination intended to avoid light pollution and a sunset viewpoint spot to be located near the water reservoir.
- Construction of sports and recreation equipment at spots along the bypass road, to include courts for tennis, platform tennis and boules, multi-use sports courts, a section of outdoor gym equipment, children's play park, etc.

This comprehensive improvement project will proportion the town of Es Pujols with a new image, offering local residents and island visitors alike much-needed services and facilities, all the while bringing the area up to par with the quality standards expected of an international tourist destination like Formentera.
