Construction moving ahead at La Mola centre for social gatherings

localsociallamola2014 webToday Formentera Island Council president Jaume Ferrer and Santi Juan, councillor of Infrastructure, visited the future site of the social centre in El Pilar de la Mola to make note of the progress being made. The centre – promoted as a gathering place for members of the community – is on track to open its doors within the first trimester of 2014.

At a 9 September meeting of the Balearic Islands government commission, the Formentera Island Council approved tender of the project to refit La Mola's neighbourhood multipurpose centre and transform it into a space for the elderly, an Internet access point and a gathering place for area residents' associations. When finished, the building will also contain office space for use by the Council and 216 post office boxes, thus finally bringing full postal service to the entirety of La Mola.

The vote of approval in September not only meant a green light for all related plans, it also set completion of the project for before this year's tourist season, making good on a long overdue debt to residents of La Mola.

The administration's decision to acquire the locale (which has a floor space of 344 m2) was based on the envisioned project's fulfilment of two objectives: providing necessary services to area residents, and putting those same residents in closer contact with the public administration. The completed centre will include a computer lab with nine posts that give locals access to the Internet and other new technologies. It will also serve as a learning space for courses in basic computer-use for seniors or extra tutoring time for students of the local primary school.

In service to the local seniors' association, another part of the project envisions creation of a 136 m2 space whose essential function would be as a meeting point; where neighbours can socialise and different group activities can be held. Other locally-based groups like Comissió de Festes (the planning group behind many local holidays), Associació de Veïns (a neighbourhood association) and Associació de Caçadors (a local hunters' association) will have use of a nearly 100 m2 space for meetings, talks and training opportunities, the object being to create a point of contact not just between residents and local community associations, but a place for contact between the different associations themselves.

Fifty percent of the project, which has been contracted to the INCOC Ltd. company for 264,000€, will be paid for by financing from the EU Leader programme. It will be the second project to use Leader funding for the creation of a digital classroom.
