This 20 February, digital cinema hits Formentera

projector digital2 90115Friday, 20 February, Formentera will welcome digital cinema to the island. Following a short pause during which time the analogue film projector previously in-use at the municipal cinema will be replaced with a newer, digital projector, normal film programming will return to the island.

On Formentera, the triumphant return of silver screen features – at last with the enhanced quality of digital technology – will happen with three different films and something for everyone. Friday at 9:30pm and Sunday at 8pm the local theatre will screen Annie, an all-ages musical that in January received a Golden Globes nomination for best original song. Spectators will immediately appreciate the drastic improvement in sound quality that the new digital technology offers.

Saturday and Sunday at 6pm is the moment that younger audiences will want to pay attention. For two straight days, the cinema will host projections Walt Disney's most recent animated smash, Big Hero.

Later in the evening on Saturday, the Formentera cinema crew has planned a screening of La Cueva, a production by filmmaker Alfredo Montero that also boasts the on-screen talent of actor Marcos Ortiz. In addition to best picture nods at the Nocturna International Film Festival (Madrid) and the Málaga Film Festival, La Cueva snagged no less than 12 nominations at last year's Goyas.

Magic in the aisles on 20 February

Next Friday is a special day indeed for cinema in Formentera. Not only is it the day that digital film projection will reach our island's shores; it was on this same day in 1988 – The Mission lighting up the screen – that Formentera's municipal cinema facilities were first inaugurated.
