Seventh year of youth football tournament brings reserve teams of six premier league clubs

torneig alevi futbol2FiC sports councillor Sergio Jiménez and staff coordinator of the football section of Societat Deportiva Formentera Luis Elcacho met this morning to announce details of the upcoming international youth football tournament (VII torneig internacional de futbol aleví), an event that will enter into its seventh year 4 and 5 April on the municipal football pitch.

SD Formentera has organised the event, of which the Formentera Council has been the principal sponsor. The regional government in Palma and the Trasmapi transport company are also contributors. Councillor Jiménez reported that in addition to a selection of players from Eivissa and hosting club SD Formentera the trials would bring youth players from Athlético de Bilbao, Real Sociedad, Real Betis, Bologna FC, Málaga CF and RCD Mallorca.

Classification will be determined in the first portion of the tournament, which begins 4 April. As Luis Elcacho explained: “Play will begin at 10am with matches of two 20-minute halves on pitches half the size of normal regulation pitches” before adding that the two-day run would be “football at its purest: raw talent and the thrill of the game”.

On 5 April, semi-finals will begin at 10am and give way to finals in the afternoon. Matches to determine third and fourth positions will kick off at 4pm and the grand final will be held at 5pm, customary scheduling for major football matches.
