Pilar Aldea’s latest show preaches ‘living the moment’

foto 2021 residirBThe Formentera Department of Culture is pleased to announce that from Tuesday 13 July, an exhibition from artist Pilar Aldea will take up residence in two separate spaces: “Residir l’instant” will be on view at Ajuntament Vell gallery till 31 July and at the Far de la Mola cultural and educational space till 16 October.

The Ajuntament Vell installation features 66 photographs from the artist’s INSTANTS series and seven pieces of photo patchwork Aldea calls “residences”. The Far de la Mola experience revolves around a nine-minute video loop dubbed “COMÚ”, plus eleven other residences and the poetic text “Llàtzars”. “Residir l’instant” grapples with the permanent stillness of photography and the potential to alter it by acting on imagery.
The Ajuntament Vell show opens at 7.00pm on Tuesday 13 July, and the Far de la Mola show opens at 10.00am a day later. Aldea put it thus: “Photographic subjects are suspended in time, trapped in an instant, surrounded by the circumstance in which he or she resides at that moment. They’ve been crystallised in a lifeless space; the photograph, in some sense, is dead weight... Finding a liberating Lazarus effect to ease the burden of the gaze became crucial, and between readings and musings I washed up on the shores of Ortega y Gasset, and his reflections on circumstance. It led me to focus on the images that run through his distinct worlds, my assumption being that to alter their ‘here’ would create a new ‘now’ and generate a flash of life”.

Aldea received her undergraduate degree in image at Madrid’s CEV School of Communication, Image and Sound in 2002. Solo and in group, she has showed photos at an array of venues including Palacio de la Audiencia (Soria), María Zambrano Library of Madrid’s Universidad Complutense, JustMAD at the Official College of Architects of Madrid and Conde Duque Cultural Centre (Madrid). In 2019, she unveiled “Semblen cordes” at Ajuntament Vell as part of the Formentera Film Festival.

In 1994, Aldea started Consulta Films, a production company split between Brussels and Madrid which she helped run until 2009. Two years later, with the help of Como Mola Productions, she started a participatory project focused on filmmaking, sharing its first fruits at the Formentera Film Festival. She has remained a collaborator since then, presenting her short film “EDÈN” at last year’s edition.

A member of the Espai_F collective since 2015, Pilar Aldea has had strong ties with the island since 1988, and currently lives in La Mola.

“Residir l’instant” opens Tuesday 13 July at 7.00pm. It can be seen at Ajuntament Vell gallery from 11.00am to 2.00pm and 7.00pm to 9.00pm until 31 July (closed Sundays and Monday mornings). It can be seen at Far de la Mola from 10.00am to 2.00pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and from 10.00am to 2.00pm and 5.00pm to 9.00pm on Wednesdays and Sundays.
