Formentera responds to rising demand with 13 new licences for seasonal taxis

The Formentera Department of Mobility is pleased to announce the approval today of 13 seasonal chauffeurs’ licences. Provisions for the change were included the 2021 Seasonal Taxi Action Plan, and it will put 52% more taxis on roads through 31 August.

Initially the plan called for three new seasonal licences, with the possibility of additional licences subject to demand. More than three applications ultimately came in, a circumstance which drove the decision to unlock an additional ten licences.

While earlier plans envisioned a 9.00am-9.00pm workday for drivers, a recently-vetted expansion will mean that, until the end of August, the island’s cabbies will provide service until 11.00pm.

Action plan
Three seasonal licences which were announced previously will stay in force till 23 September, while the current run of 10 expire at the end of August. Drivers demonstrating need may request their licence be extended through September.

The addition of 13 taxis to Formentera’s standing year-round fleet of 25 puts the total number of cabs at 38, an all-time high for the island.

Applicants included seven ordinary licence holders and six salaried employees who accredited at least five months’ relevant experience between 2018 and 2019.

The number of seasonal licenses and hours of service were agreed between the Formentera government and the Union Group of Formentera Taxi Drivers.

Extraordinary circumstances
In light of unusual circumstances stemming from covid-19:
-The action plan is in force only during the summer 2021 season.
-The Consell is rebating the typically €1,000/month licence fee in full.
