Summer 2023 accreditation to drive on Formentera now available on formentera.eco

The Office of Mobility of the Consell de Formentera is pleased to report that the formentera.eco website was activated yesterday, Monday 27 February, regulating vehicles that are brought and driven on the island from 1 June to 30 September.

Said Rafael González, mobility councillor, "Requesting authorisation is simple, the service works like a booking website." Visitors must pay a fee to drive on the island during the regulatory dates. The rate in 2023 will be: €6/day for passenger cars (€30 minimum) and €3/day for motorcycles (€15 minimum).

Pending definitive approval of the updated rate, motorists will continue to pay the rate from 2022, namely, €3/day for cars (€15 minimum) and €1.50/day for motorcycles (€7.50 minimum). The updated 2023 rate, initially approved at the January plenary assembly, is now in a period of public consultation. Definitive approval and entry in force of the new rate is expected in April, and thereafter motorists must pay that rate.

Cap on vehicles
This summer will mark the fifth year of formentera.eco. As set out at the start of the legislature, the ceiling on vehicles will be reduced 16% compared to the pre-regulatory period. The total number of passenger cars and motorcycles for visitor and rental vehicles will be capped at 10,458.

Councillor González gave a positive assessment of the four years of regulation. During that time, traffic has fallen 8.5% from the historical maximum and, from 2021 to 2022, the average length of tourist stays went from 3.5 days to 5.4 and the portion of single-day visits fell from 40% to 27% of all requests. In addition, cycling and taxi use has increased and public transport ridership has returned to pre-pandemic levels. Hence, the councillor concluded that "we have laid the foundations for the path forward and must continue working to reduce the number of cars on our roads."
