Local schoolchildren learn road safety

foto 2023iv educ viaria CThe Office of Interior of the Consell de Formentera is pleased to report that during the second trimester of the 2022-2023 school year, Formentera Local Police will give theory-based and hands-on road safety classes to pupils in primary schools. Today we attended a practical class for year three pupils at Mestre Lluís Andreu primary school. The morning session saw children applying traffic rules as they rode their bicycles across a playground circuit punctuated with signs, traffic lights and traffic circles.

In three theoretical sessions preceding today's practical class, a traffic instructor explained the basics of safe vehicle operation and, to years three through six, how to ride bicycles. Years one and two learn proper conduct as pedestrians, with the practical part reserved for a later date.

As Josep Marí, interior councillor, explained, "these classes are yet another service provided by our local law enforcement. The children are quite keen, and the lessons assure safer mobility habits and notions of how to maintain respectful social relations on public roads". The councillor also applauded the support provided by members of the Civil Protection corps, who help assemble and disassemble the circuit.
